As history has shown, first rounders are not a guarantee NHL player.

Have they already altered the compensation level? Every 2016 chart I can find says 4 firsts starts at 9.38 million/season

Its calculated over 5 seasons for contracts that are longer than that. So 7x9 = 63 million, over 5 years is 12.6 million which is 4 firsts.

Only problem with Vegas, is there not something that in the expansion rules that guarantees them high lottery picks in the first few years, regardless of standings? Or was that just a rumor that was floating around? If that is the case Vegas is the team you want to offersheet your players (within reason).

After this draft they're (Vegas) no different than any other team.

So then same contract AAV over 5 years. Probably would be more attractive to Draisaitl actually. Edmonton matches without batting an eye? I'm guessing for sure they do if it's the flames, which would make it an excellent reason to do it, IMO. But does Edmonton match if an Eastern team offered them that?

I would give draisaitl a 3 year offer

5 million in yr 1
7.5 million in yr 2
10 million in yr 3

That would cost a 1st 2nd and 3rd. If I was Leon I would wait for that offer. And I think a team with a good 3 year window would consider that type of contract.

No way he takes a deal that ends before his UFA year and take a discount on a new team to boot.

It does have that poison pill on the third year. He would have to be qualified at 10M.

I suspect that Leon would take that deal. The 4th year of that deal is either a guaranteed 10 million dollars, or a long term deal or he is a UFA.

Yeah, but most hockey players push for the longest term possible.

Why settle for $22 million when you can get a guaranteed $50+?

Hmm, interesting. I still think that this would not be considered by his camp as it is a discount, differs most of his money, and probably believes that he is making at least 10 on his next deal anyway.

I get it risk vs reward. 7x7 49 million guaranteed or 3 yrs 22million and 4 years 10AAV = 62 million. Barring injury option 2 is better.

Ya, but the thing is that if he is concerned about money first and foremost, he can leverage his first deal up to around 9x7 or 8. Not saying that is what it will end up at, but if he is only concerned with money, he would end up getting up to 9 this offseason.

I'd love to hear from Oiler fans in regards to offer sheet scenarios.

There won't be one.

If guys like Lindholm and Rakell and Kucherov last summer on teams with no cap space are not getting offer sheeted than guys on teams with lots of cap space won't get offer sheeted.

Chia said in his presser yesterday when asked about it that sure its a concern but we have a ton of cap space so all you would be doing is driving up the market and making your own players more expensive.

Hell Monahan didn't get an offer sheet and he scored a ton of goals on his ELC.

Either way there are a lot of good options for Leon. If I was his agent, I would basically tell the Oilers I would not be willing to sign before the free agency period unless the team either

A) offered 48 million over 6
B) offered 60 million over 7 or
C) offered 72 million over 8

He has had two seasons and a playoff that justify those numbers. And I would be reasonably confident that somebody may be willing to offer sheet my guy in any event.

Offer sheets have been signed 8 times in 12 seasons since the full season lockout of 05/06.

I'd honestly be more worried about Draisaitl getting a huge long term contract, and then ending up $1-2 million overpaid per season.

The second scenario has happened with much more frequency.

I was just throwing out a scenario with the poison pill that would net him more money if, and only if, he doesn't see eye to eye with Edmonton. When it comes down to it, the only way this drags to an offer sheet scenario is if things blow up between him and Edmonton.

Anonymous sources said that Kevin Lowe disagreed with Chia's assessment.
