I like our resident Canucks “trolls”

But it seems this year, they have all turned into experts on young defenseman. Funny how that happens when your franchise best defenseman goes from Jyrki Lumme to Quinn Hughes.

There is a bit of recency bias here with development of young defensemen. Because Heiskenan, Makar and Hughes have stepped in and dominated, its formed the opinion that if you don’t, then you are what you are.

The majority of young defensemen need time to fully develop. Even Niedrrmayer and Pronger (Chris not Sean for our Canuck friends) struggled a bit in their first 5 seasons.

And let’s not think that just because young defensemen expode onto the scene and dominate quickly does not mean their development can’t reverse.

After his first 3 seasons in the NHL, Phaneuf looked like he was going to be a Hall if Famer, we know how that turned out.

I don’t think the Flames should trade Hanifin yet unless it’s an offer you can’t refuse. He’s had a few games over the past two seasons where he has dominated so the potential is there.

Not much I got out of the Friedman hit.

- Hall might consider several options which include going short term to chase a cup (Colorado)
- speculation on what happens with Fluery
I didn’t catch much else except at the end of the hit he said there is going to be a big market for Markstrom if the Canucks don’t get him signed.

Last comment “You know Markstrom and Lindholm are really tight”

I was hype for Hanifin as while he did not have the offense of Hamilton I believed him to be a more well rounded player at the time of the trade but again development appears to have more or less plateaud with him which is why I believe he is once again available.

Overall, a downgrade on asset value without much of a contractual benefit.
Sorry, what was the downgrade in asset value? Trade was not 1 for 1.

I disagree that development has plateaued, he was clearly being held back by being paired with Hamonic, and was much better with Andersson. Those two could be the Flames' top pairing next season, if Gio's apparent decline continues and if Brodie is not re-signed or replaced with someone comparable.

Funny how things change.
A year ago, I was all for Hamonic, keep him, resign him - heart and soul guy...
I was also on board for trading Bodie or letting him walk.

Complete reversal on how I feel about those two hockey players. I would like to have Brodie back and am fine with letting Hamonic go.

I like Hanafin and hope he stays with the club. As others have said, he seems to be playing well when paired with Anderson as opposed to Hamonic.

Overall, I think our defence needs a bit more sandpaper. Would love to have an Engelland type player. Don’t know who that would be and what it would cost.

Hanafin for Domi
Hanafin for Dylan Strome +2nd
Hanafin for Clayton Keller
Hanafin +2nd for William Nylander
Hanafin + 2nd for Boeser
Hanafin+ 2nd for Mantha

Hanafin for Dumba+2nd
Hanafin + 2nd for Parayko

Those are the types of Hanafin trades I would be interested in. Hope we're not just unloading him for nothing, but I can see why he is the one they are thinking of moving. Just make it a good Hockey trade for Hanifin.

This is much easier to understand once you know the Flash Walken posting rubric:

Lol I can never get this poor guy's name right, hence my willingness to engage in trades with him.

And I (the person who brought up Jones) was only saying that Jones took 4 seasons to hit his stride (and then was only 22 when he did). So Hanifin, brought in at a very young age like Jones, might have a similar timetable.

This is in no way a statement that Hanifin is as good as Jones, has the same ceiling, or is similar in any other way.

Billy Guerin has announced that the Wild won't be re-signing Mikko Koivu.

Man, if there's a team that badly needs a centre, it's that one.

Was it said because Mikko is retiring?

Is he? I haven't seen any confirmation of that, only rumours.

It's a little weird to see a team trading from such a position of weakness. Their centre depth right now is Erickson Ek, Rask, Donato and Sturm.

It makes me think that they already have a deal done in principal with somebody.

I think Minnesota says no. Even though we are giving up the better player I would think that Minnesota is about to enter a rebuild.

They reportedly told Koivu that they weren't bringing him back at the exit interviews. Doesn't sound like Koivu has decided whether he is playing or not next season.

I guess they will play Johannson at C. But that just replaces Koivu's production. Not Staal's.

Saying Hanifin is what he is is just as whacked as saying he will definitely get better. Neither are necessarily true, and the NHL is littered with players who peaked that young, even if that isn't the norm.

Good thing it is only Eklund but a little scary since he has flyers connections.

“ Calgary/Philly talk.

The Flames are continuing to search out options for Johnny Gaudreau and it's no secret Gaudreau, who grew up a Flyers fan in South Jersey, is very much a good fit for a Philly team who wants to add scoring and speed. The asking price would start with Gostisbehere, who will very much benefit from a fresh start, a pick and a player...some are speculating that Van Riemsdyke could be included to make the money work and give Calgary help on the power play...”

Lol Ghost and Van Riemsdyk? We better be getting Patrick, their 1st and Myers to help offset that awfulness.
