This core has had plenty of opportunity. At some point it's time to alter the core a little.

Our "best players" are not the best players in the playoffs.

One alternative that we can do, if you really want this core to remain in tact, is to find veteran players that have been in the playoffs before. Our team lacks a lot of playoff experience. It's not a coincidence Lucic played better in the postseason. He's been there and done that. Our lack of winning round 1 has really been detrimental to this franchise. We need players that will help us get over the hump.

Heiskanen, Benn, Pavelski, Radulov, and Klingberg led Dallas in ESP.

Gaudreau 2
Rieder had more SHG (3) in these 10 playoff games than Gaudreau has 5v5 goals (2) in his entire playoff history of 30 games.

Gaudreau also only has 2 5v5 assists in those 30 playoff games.

But the other teams are supposedly unaware of this and the Flames will render a remarkable player(s) in a trade.

Playoff returns are definitely wanting, but despite that Gaudreau is still a top-line player on a great contract for two years. That is valuable.

I think lots of teams will have interest in Gaudreau who are short of PP help, regular season scoring support, etc. I think it will be something like Kessel to Pittsburgh. Toronto still got plenty of assets in that trade even though Kesselís rep was less than stellar.

If anything Iím looking at that albatross Giordano contract if Iím Treliving. Thatís a proper anchor unless Gio can find decent form again. Between him and Lucic weíre talking a lot of dead cap space.

Giordano had a bad playoff but there's also an extremely good case to be made that he was once again the Flames' best player in the 2019-20 regular season.

Giordano is a shortened season away from winning the Norris, and now he's some scrub with an albatross contract? SMH

No. Johnnie just hasnít evolved his own game and hasnít grown. Canít expect doing the same things over and over and expect a different result. Insanity

The forward group is deep enough to contend, we just need a few pieces to get there. Now I am in favour of moving Gaudreau if you can make a trade where a piece comes back to help now because I don't think he fits in Ward's system. This team definitely has a window right now to win though.
In the 11 years leading up to their cup, the Caps made the playoffs 10 times and never, ever laid an egg in the first round.
- In the three years that they lost in the 1st round it was always a Game 7.
- Four times they lost the 2nd round in 7 games. Once in 6. Once they were swept.

There was legitimate reason for hope.

What were the Caps missing all those years? Several things...all teams have holes, but probably that elusive 1-2 punch at C most of all.

They missed the playoffs in '13-14. But a 26OA pick from 2010 playing in his 1st full season coincides with their breakout from stagnancy. That Tom Wilson guy helped a lot, too.

Ovy, Backstrom, Holtby, and Carlson were all there from 2012 or earlier.

Green, Alzner, Semin, Laich, M Johansson, Jeff Schultz, Chris Clark, Beagle, maybe Joel Ward/Brouwer/various goalies - all were probably considered 'core' pieces at one point or another. WAS made plenty of mistakes along the way, but they clearly picked the right guys to stay committed with.

Here's a better challenge: find me a core group who actually banged their heads against the wall for 5 years, but then went onto sustained success without significant core changes?

Put me in the camp that this group needs a shakeup. The core specifically has had success in the regular season which is why some people think they should keep it intact. But they're clearly a tier below other teams' core come playoffs, especially Monahan/Gaudreau duo. I don't see how anyone could even argue otherwise.

Iím hoping I am proved wrong, but he was in steady decline since that monster season. If he canít return to form that contract is indeed an albatross.
