Wasn't Ryan used sparingly in the playoffs last year? He may not be a part of Ward's plans. At his age and salary he'll still be Flames property at the end of the claim period.
Kylington is a guy who can skate and has offensive upside but doesn't drive the play. His defense isn't consistently NHL level. Young and flashy so fans like him and don't understand why he doesn't get a chance. Clearly the Flames hate young players... except I doubt he'll be claimed. So then what does that say about Kylington?

Ryan was always meh to me.
Definitely overpaid and it seemed like the signing was a favour for Peters.
No Peters, no Ryan.
and good riddance to Kylington..... No way a KY can be pronounced like a SH.

Waiving Ryan is a bad move. I understand the cap concerns but the guy was the most consistent member of the bottom six last season, can play up and down the lineup, and by all accounts is a fantastic team player.
Kylington is a head-scratcher but he just hasn't progressed as expected and was always going to be a fringe guy this season unless he showed some real improvement. Still hate to see him go, especially if Edmonton takes him.

I am the only one who thinks it is a positive sign that the Flames have to waive good players.

No he is not. Stone is on a PTO, non contract, thus no waivers. They'd have to sign him first, then put him on waivers.

Kylington getting claimed worries me a bit. He has the speed and skills to occasionally show highlight reel plays. He just hasn't made himself reliable enough yet.
As is, I think there are teams where he would be an upgrade to their current defense - including Edmonton. Oilers seem pretty high on their own tweeners though, so maybe they pass.
It is a risk for sure and one we might regret. Hopefully not.

I'm not so sure any of them get claimed, there's a lot of solid tweeners on waivers today

In other News. Jankowski made the opening night roster for the Pens. Good for him.

This is a good sign, plus whats so special about Kylington? I dont get it. He's like Erik Karrlson-lite, without the points.

Mackey doesn't require waivers to be sent to Stockton/Taxi Squad. He'll most-likely be on one or the other when the opening night roster is announced.

I don't think I've seen anyone consider that maybe Ryan wasn't playing well in camp or fitting well in the lineups that were being used? Perhaps he's becoming less effective and is being pushed out by some very good younger players?
In that case, I think having Derek Ryan on your taxi squad is pretty sweet. There's a lot of people calling this a big mistake, but not putting more thought into why the Flames would do it beyond salary. They want to win. And they have much more info than us.

According to this, only 11 teams have the cap room to claim Ryan's $3.125M cap hit:
https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/cap/
This excludes LTIR, but IIRC that doesn't kick in until the season starts so I'm guessing that is why he got waived today.
A lot of non-playoff teams, but if you're looking to plug a gap with a reasonable player with only one year left on his contract, there could be a fit. The question is whether you want to develop someone else in that spot, or perhaps sign one of the many UFA's still out there (whom you could likely get for the league minimum).
I suspect he won't be claimed.

Rinaldo being waived - expected
Kylington being waived - surprising
Ryan being waived - shocked
As a couple of posters have stated, good players being waived is probably a good thing.
I do think that Kylington gets claimed. Not guaranteed he gets claimed, but I do think he does get claimed just based on his contract and potential. A team can claim him and keep him as their 7th defencemen while they work with him for a few weeks.
Ryan SHOULD get claimed, but with the climate in the NHL right now, that's not a given. Not everyone can fit that contract into their lineup.
Would be kind of funny if Rinaldo is the guy that ends up getting claimed. LoL
I thought Kylington might be on the bubble with the Nesterov signing, as well as Mackey being well thought of by Ward. I just hope Edmonton doesn't claim him - Kylington would have no hope in hell of ever developing into a regular NHL player in that organization. Hopefully he will go unclaimed.

It’s quite possible this is all just for cap flexibility too.
With the taxi squad it actually makes a lot of sense just to carry a 20 man roster. And by waiving guys you have more flexibility on how that works.
Since cap space is calculated daily and accrues up this could be a way to create some deadline space for an add. You put your 13th forward and 7th dman on the taxi squad to have a lower daily hit and keep the cap space.
It’s a risk that they might get taken on waivers but lots of teams are going to be doing this, so doing it now likely lowers that risk.
