I've been looking for a model train to strap my phone to for a few hours as a "walking hack".
Those things are fracking expensive. Even lego or K'Nex doesn't seem to have any reasonably priced options.
A few observations after asking people and monitoring my own play...
Data usage wise, 15MB-20MB an hour average has been reported online. This sounds about right as I'm using 30MB ish an hour tethering a friend while playing myself. Not crazy data usage IMO. Reasonable. You can also download offline maps on Google maps to reduce this usage, but the difference must be so negligible, I don't even notice it as I have 3GB per month anyways.
Turning off AR during pokebattles halves the drain on the battery. Silent vs sound of course helps as well. Turning off other background apps help, so does turning off bluetooth, though the latter two are negligible.
My personal average drain on a iphone 6 was about 25-30% an hour which included tethering. A buddy on a 5S was losing around 20-25% an hour. Bring a battery pack.
Someone reported placing their phone and battery pack in a ziploc bag helped immensely when it is raining. Unsure of the accuracy of such a claim, though I did see several people with ziploc bagged phones.
The ring around the pokemon (area you can hit) has two bits of info. Small ring = harder to hit, but supposedly higher rate of capture and vice versa for a bigger ring. The color of the ring means difficulty to capture. Green = easy, yellow = medium, orange, hard, red = harder.
Razzberries aid capturing a pokemon. Razzberries however will cause pokeballs thrown after the razzberry to curve when thrown. Learning how to spin throw a pokeball may lessen the difficulties with curving balls and you get an EXP bonus for every pokemon caught.
EDIT: There are conflicting reports whether individuals are accidentally activating curve ball mode (holding down too long/swirling ball) or if it's an actual part of the game, or a glitch causing many random balls to curve regardless of Razzberry. I activate curve ball regularly now due to my annoyance of being unable to control straight flicks on occasion. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.

There is a lucky egg EXP strategy. Save up stardust and candies and wait for the right time to maximize the EXP bonus.
