Presenting the new FWD compact from BMW...errr, I mean the new 5 series.

Being disappointed in the new BMW is sort of tradition now, so it's not even that surprising. I was going to say it looks like a Chinese knockoff of a BMW, but honestly even the Chinese are designing better looking cars these days.

The new styling and design language really sucks. Awkward angles slathered with gloss black plastic you can swap for carbon fiber at the cost of a kidney.

Big fan of the Hofmeister kink counter-swing with embossed number 5. Would have been disappointing if they left that out.

The grill is still ugly(and now unnecessary).

Oh my god, that looks horrible.

I wish I had never sold my E39 M5 now.

Every new car that comes out makes me like my 2012 CLS all the more.

Will the actual 5 series look like this too? I'm not talking about the I5.

The current gen 5 series is the best looking sedan available for purchase right now.

Ignoring the tacky headlights/grille/body lines, I also don't understand why BMW is adding this black silhouette along the bottom portion of almost all of their vehicles. It makes it look like the car is sitting high and raised, when the look they should be going for is low and wide.

Now that you mention it, that black bottom portion makes it look like a Subaru.

Not a fan of the black plastic BMW has been incorporating into their new designs. It's kind of weird that BMW sales have never been better at a time where everyone seems down on their styling while some of their classic designs that people look fondly back on weren't exactly great sellers. I do think you can go bland and unnoticed when selling commuter transportation but people spending $$$ on a luxury people want to be noticed for better or worse.

Want to get an estimate in replacing the factory radio with something that has apple carplay for my wife's Civic. I've found a replacement dashboard piece that will accept a 2 DIN stereo. Would also like to have a backup camera installed at the same time.

Anyone recommend someone that could do that work?

After going car shopping maybe we'll just get more usage out of the Civic by adding some of the features she wants.

I like Crutchfield for sourcing all the possibilities for replacing factory units, it will tell you what adapter trim panels you need, wiring adapters for steering wheel controls etc.

I don't know installers as I try to do everything myself. i just put a whole system in my '12 F150 and retained the steering wheel controls. The head unit I bought didnt support SYNC but I could have done that with another unit.

You could do it, sort out which radio you want, go to crutchfield, buy the connector kit. Everything is plug and play now so it's super easy. There is probably a tutorial on youtube.

Looking from the rear view, I see a lot of similarities to other cars in that car...Subaru, Acura, Jag, Alfa, Accord, Lexus IS. The one I'm not getting a ton of, is actual BMW dna. Take the badge off and I'm not sure the average person could tell you the brand from anywhere but maybe the front view.

Gotta remember that these days, China is what influences design...and for better or worse the Chinese market seems to like busy and over-designed cars. BMW is also the ultimate new money car...and new money likes to shout.

TIL "SE" on Toyotas is "Sports Edition". I always assumed "Special Edition" because there was never anything remotely sporty about them.

The one that was OBVIOUSLY "sport" was the Corolla S. More power? Stiffer handling? Ha! Double sided 3M-tape and some plastic bits!
