Default Standalone mp3 players. How long will they continue to exist?

Do any of you still rock a standalone mp3 player? How long do you think you'll keep using one? I think especially with the drop of bluetooth headphone prices as well as convenience of phones, they won't last long.

Personally, I think I will always try to keep a stand alone portable set up for two, but gone are they days that I will keep several on hand for different purposes. I do think that sooner or later (guessing in 2-3 years) I will no longer feel the need to have a stand alone mp3 player.

My current set up is a Fiio X3 gen 1 + DT770. This is probably the last standalone mp3 I will be using.

I also recently unearthed an old Cowon J3. Probably the most perfect mp3 player ever designed style and functionality wise IMO. I have no idea why I stopped using it.

Are the rest of you considering ceasing the use of your mp3 players?

I'll use my ipod classic till it dies. And then I'll try to find another one.

My iPod classic died last month, got a Nano to replace it, I'll use it at the gym and plugged into my car
The only time I'll use my phone has a music player is if I'm on Spotify, other than that no music stored on there

I still buy CDs. MP3s/FLACs are like last-resort level stuff for me.

I don't have the inclination to use my phone as my MP3 player, so I still use my iPod Classic. At this point most people are more confused than anything when they see it.

I think there's still a good place for high capacity standalone players, but apparently the majority don't feel that way.

I love my iPod Classic, but now with iTunes Match I can get all my music to my devices from the cloud.

If you will be away from Wi-Fi, you can download playlists to the device, and remove them later.

Why don't you standalone MP3 player folks use your phones? Is it because they are too distracting? Storage concerns? I've often wondered this as I use my iPhone exclusively for music and audio books at the gym.

Running with a phone sucks. It's also a distraction. Storage is an issue, and battery life when traveling.

I hate using my phone for music. Battery life on the classic lasts way longer, and has 5x the storage space of my phone. And I much prefer the controls on the ipod over the phone.

When I'm travelling especially it comes in handy, so I can still have a full charge on my phone when I get wherever I'm going.

Unfortunately with apple music now I'm streaming everything and have 2 ipod classics just sitting around.

I just bought a Fiio X1 lossless player. It has line out capability so it subs as a cd player here at work. I have to say the sound quality is very good. It is also small enough to use while working out.

Draining battery life of phone
Output quality wasn't as great in previous generations phones
Phone memory upgrades to store the music were expensive
I hated the interface for the music players in phones
Already had previous mp3 players
Phones were fragile and a pain to replace. Mp3 would hurt the heart, but easier to replace.

Even though most of this has been resolved, it's somewhere between habit and still hating the interface for music that keeps me to sound systems and mp3 players.

On a side note... I am debating heavily if I should allow the J3 to go to a new home either via sale or trade. I like the Fiio X3 due to the built in DAC and amp over the J3, and it seems such a waste to allow a J3 that still performs great to collect dust...

I don't use a stand alone MP3 player. Everything is done through my phone (I stream through Deezer, it's wonderful).

Home playback is done through Denon speakers, over wireless.

I was tired of carrying around two devices, and my classic is more or less dead. I couldn't be bothered to buy another MP3 player.

Probably forever. I'm not a fan of the bluetooth headphones. I still buy cds and records too so I'll never go fully digital and wireless.

I like my nano iPod for the gym. My 6S+ is way too big to use when working out.

I still use my Classic. I go buy CDs still and rip them. I also go to the mountains a lot so it's nice to be able to listen to anything anywhere. Plus I find the subscription services don't have a lot of the deeper cuts by artists I like.
I guess the Iphone 7 has a 256gb model, so Ill probably switch over to that at some point.

Love my old 30 gig video, but the battery crapped out-I bought a cheap one but it's not really great either. I'd like to get another new battery as it's a much better music player than my Ipod touch. I also was reading somewhere that people are modding them with high capacity SD cards.

What I'm trying to get as is that if you were to use a phone or a modern smart device you'd have access to all kinds of libraries (Spotify, Deezer, Google Music, iTunes). Is that not appealing at all?

Until they no longer let me use a standalone one I will use a standalone one. Using the cloud is fine until one is travelling anywhere (even a drive down the highway). Phones just don't have the space necessary to hold a decent sized library along with everything else.

And the battery life and size that was already mentioned.
