We just got a puppy in March. My best advice is to buy boxes and boxes of puppy pads!!!!!!!! And give it lots of hugs and lots of walks. Redvans pup looks alot like mine! Mines a yorkie/silky

I'm sure if given the choice, a dog would pick a home where the owner was at work from 8-12 hrs/day rather than sitting in a pen at the humane society.
Cute little dog though, where do you put the mop handle??

She is 3/4 yorkie and 1/4 $h!tzhu (sp?).
The mop handle was not included from the family we got her from. I'll have to get that tomorrow :-p

That dog is very cute!
Coincidentally, my family also just got a puppy at the end of May. I just love holding him!
I have a question for some dog owners out there. My puppy is ten weeks old and he is currently growing some serious fangs. We have lots of toys for him to chew and he gets a lot of exercise, but he still insists on chewing on me, whether it be hands, legs, pants. He also chews on my couch and table legs, even after I've sprayed it with a bitter spray. I've tried almost everything, like saying no, leaving him, making a loud noise with pennies. I know (hope) he'll grow out of it, but is there anything I can do right now? It hurts when he bites, his teeth are super sharp.

Roll up a magazine and smack the brat on the ass. Then the next time he does it, do the same thing. It shouldn't take more than a couple smacks before he learns that the mere motion of rolling up a magazine = trouble. The bonus is that all future transgressions can be handled by rolling up something. The dog will see you doing it and immediately know that whatever he's doing is bad.
I'm not kidding. I'm sure alot of people will contradict this post, but it really does work. You're the alpha. In dog packs, when a subordinate pisses off the alpha, he gets his ears chomped. You basically need to do the same thing, just a little more humane since puppies are so damn adorable.
FTR, don't use your hand to smack him. The rolled up magazine is like a mental barrier for the dog that he recognizes as the deliverer of pain, instead of you.

I just told my dog NO and ignored her when she chewed on me. This also worked to get her to stop licking me. I've never been a fan of a dog that licks people. Now she does neither.
I don't really like to hit my dog, but there have been times when she's outside in a barkfest with the dog next door and I'd just take off my flip flop and whack her with it to get her attention.
Yorkies are great dogs. I've considered getting one. You get the convenience of a small dog with the disposition of a larger breed. Excellent choice!

My best advice would be to get a cat.
Less needy, less annoying, less stinky, and poop in their own toilet instead of wherever they feel like.
And cuter too.
SO ha, cats > dogs forever.

Living with a cat would probably be as much fun as living with your inlaws....

Particularly when he bites you, you have to let him know that it is unacceptable (without correction he won't grow out of it. Most teenage dogs that are handed in at rescue centres, in my experience, are the ones that have never had any basic manners training and sadly the most likely to be euthanised). The mother of your dog would have made a noise and nipped him right back. What you can do to maintain (or try to get) Alpha status is make a VERY loud noise (make him jump) like a yelp when he bites you and you can pinch his upper lip . Of course, don't put your hand in his mouth in the first place , Always go through doors first. Ignore him for five minutes when you come into a room (or come home) - only acknowledge him when YOU call him over. The first six months are so important - socialising them in general and puppy classes are a good way to go.

I just got a dog in March so I have been going through the same thing.
I do agree with 4x4 that good spank usually teaches a dog but I personally keep the spanks for very serious incidents such as the dog chewing on furniture.
At our puppy class, the instructor told us when the dog is biting you to put your hand deep into it's mouth and play around. You should obviously not be aggressive in their mouth but rubbing their gums or playing with their tounge's is fine and they absolutely hate it. After awhile they figure out that if I bite this person then they will do that thing with mouth that I hate... I don't want that. You should always replace your hand with a toy after so they know what they can chew on. It worked pretty well for me.
