Default Stephen Hawking, modern cosmology's brightest star, dies aged 76

https://www.theguardian.com/science/...r-dies-aged-76

Quote:
Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in the firmament of science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76.

His family released a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning confirming his death at his home in Cambridge.

Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.

“His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

“He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”

What he did in his lifetime with what he had is nothing short of a miracle. We were really lucky to have him this long.

Rest well sir, you've earned it.

He was a giant of science and he helped me (and many other dummies) understand black holes and other aspects of astrophysics.

It’s great that he was able to live a long life in spite of his disability.

"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail," Hawking said Sunday in The Guardian. "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

One of the great minds of our time, who turned a handicap into a serious intellectual focus.

This is a big huge loss. The first ship that goes to Mars on a manned mission needs to have his name.

And laser guns.

RIP Sir

When he was first diagnosed, his doctors thought he'd live 2 more years. That was 55 years ago.

The man beat all the odds to get to 76 years. There isn’t a Hawking book or article that I didn’t at least try to understand. One of the greatest minds of all time.

RIP.

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.

I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.

The collective IQ of the human race dropped this evening. RIP, sir.

Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up. ~ Stephen Hawking

Great film, and I read the news of this while listening to the film's soundtrack which I often do while studying. One of my favourite pieces of music.
