Hughes was outstanding last year. The Devils are much worse without him. This is worth it.

certainly didn't expect him to get that kind of long-term deal already. Good for him.

56 point pace last year, I think outstanding might be a strong word. (Yes, I know he was 19.)
This contract is all about locking him up for his peak years, not about what he has done to this point.

Tough to say if either of their 1st overalls are worth the big deals they received.

Of course — but he was electric. His line with Sharangovich and Kuokkanen was dominant. Very good omen IMO.
Much more confident in this deal than Hischier's.

Pay for your best players during the prime of their careers. Don't set them up for an 8 year contract when they are 24.
I wish the Flames would have done deals like this.

This has to be the most dollars for the least amount of points that any forward has ever signed in the NHL.
$64 million for 55 career points.

Anyone who has watched Hughes play more than a few games since the beginning of last season knows this is a great deal for New Jersey. He will be out performing that contract by 2023-24
That organization is loaded with talent, especially up front and has a franchise goaltender. Watch out.

Some risk but based on last year, it’s a decent and fair signing. Obviously it’s paying for potential duh

Flames were also a bit unlucky, and Devils are lucky that Hughes didn't put up crazy numbers on a rebuilding team.
Tkachuk went off for a career year and PPG the season that he became eligible to re-sign off his ELC.
Even if he just goes for a 60 point season that year instead of 77, he probably would have gotten 8 x $7M and we'd be laughing.

64 million in your pocket and being a FA again at 29. Hard to say it's a bad deal.
If he outplays the deal he sets himself up for a huge 2nd contract. If he doesn't he protected himself.

In hindsight, maybe it would have been better to sign Johnny to an $8MX8yrs vs. his $6.75Mx6yrs. It sure worked out for the Oilers with Draisaitl.

I still kind of put that on the Flames. They could have re-signed Tkachuk during the summer of 2018.

If Hughes isn't a 1st line forward, the Devils are ####ed no matter what they pay him
