Flames Johnston: Mangiapane on long list for Canada's Olympic team

https://www.thestar.com/sports/hocke...candidate.html

Quote:
You won’t find Andrew Mangiapane’s name on any projected Team Canada rosters.

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t put himself on management’s radar after an MVP performance at the IIHF world hockey championship and a scorching start to the season for the Calgary Flames.

Mangiapane was included on Canada’s Olympic long list, per sources, and he’s scored seven goals in eight games since. The speedy 25-year-old winger faces tough odds given the country’s enviable forward depth, but his dominant performance at the world championship in Latvia carries weight with Hockey Canada.

Pretty amazing for a guy who was once passed over for the world junior tournament and didn’t get drafted until his second year of eligibility. Calgary took him with the 166th pick in 2015 at the urging of scout Terry Dornan and that looks like a home-run selection now.

A mere mention is an accomplishment considering Canada has probably 12 centermen alone who could make up the forward corps for the team.

I already saw the thread on HF where Oiler fans are campaigning for Hyman to get a spot like Kunitz did in the past.

Mangiapane would be a solid role player/grinder type for team Canada. Can play that role while also putting the puck in the net. If he makes it man that is going to be a huge contract

Lol Oil fans calling for Hyman to make the team.
I would find is amusing if he did not and Mangiapane did.

He’s entering that “elite” conversation, what else is there to say?

Could be on the 4th line killing penalties. He’s going to drive to play whenever he’s on the ice. Dude is brilliant.

it'll be interesting if the only 2014 draft eligibles in the 2022 olympics are Mangiapane (undrafted) and Point (3rd rounder)

I could see Ekblad and Bennett getting consideration though.

I'm surprised these lists haven't leaked out yet.

People around the teams must know who's on the lists because the whole point of them is to provide WADA with a list of players who could be in the Olympics, making them subject to random drug testing. As a result, the teams' medical staffs would need to know to make sure they don't give a player something that's forbidden by the Olympics that might be okay in the NHL.

I wonder if this means Mangiapane is the only Flame on Canada's list, or if he's just the most-surprising? I would have thought Monahan and Tanev could be there too.

With Monahan's past couple of seasons why would he be on the radar?

It’s kinda likely he would go based on pairings. That isn’t a new thing for team Canada to do in a short tourney.

See Kunitz. (Edit: this was said above already).

I'm pretty sure McDavid-MacKinnon is a better pairing than McDavid-Hyman, if there was every a question about that.

Mangiapane would have to be close to leading the league in goals all season long I think. If he was playing on our top line I think he’d have an outside chance.

So was Crosby and basically anyone else. On paper.

They also need a third player on the line…. And multiple lines.

It is also not something especially common. Kunitz had already had a history of International play, had won a Stanley Cup and was playing with Crosby for four years before he was named to the Olympic team.

It is completely different.

Because of the previous seasons he has had. Since entering the NHL, Monahan has scored the 9th-most goals of any active Canadian player. Plus, he's recovering from a significant injury, which hurt his recent performance, so it's not inconceivable he could regain his previous form (from the perspective of someone making the list three weeks ago).

Also, this is an all-or-nothing list. If a player wasn't on the October 15th list for his country, he can't play in the Olympics no matter how strong he plays during the season. The management team needs to be pretty confident that a player won't be on the radar come January to leave him off the list in October.

Hyman because of pairings? Lol. RNH & Yamamoto aren’t going to the Olympics.

Fun fact: Kailer Yamamoto has 0 points through 7 games. Who remembers the "Dynamite Line!": the best line in hockey?

Mangiapane has blossomed into quite the player. Not bad for a guy that had skating issues and couldn't stay on his feet. Very smart player with a great shot. A guy that really became more than the sum of his parts. A very happy surprise for a team that needed one. As CroFlames mentioned, very unlikely he gets anything more than a passing nod, but an honor all the same. Mangiapane is a guy the Flames need to get locked up to a good long-term deal as soon as they can.

His stats are that of the invisible man:

GP 7
G 0
A 0
Pts 0
+/- 0

And he is around 14:00 mins/game.

Mangiapane is great but his usage has been a bit hit and miss this year.

9th most ice time among our forwards at 5v5, actually feels a bit under used so far this year.

"Do I put McDavid with MacKinnon and make a super line? Or maybe I should put him with Crosby, probably the most cerebral player available to me? Or maybe I should take the best player in the world, and play him with Hyman, because... well, that's who he plays with in Edmonton. And Edmonton is the greatest team in, like, ever!"
