Before that he had one of his best years ever with Wag the Dog, Jackie Brown, and Cop Land all coming out in '97. All very good films with great work from De Niro.

He may as well just walk around with the script in his hand and read directly from it... it's probably less awkward than watching him read cue cards.

Did anyone else watch this? I didn't even realize there was a new episode until I read an article about Pete Davidson's bit on Weekend Update.

"Leave me Alurn" was hilarious. I actually laughed quite a bit at the earlier sketches

The best part of the show was Aidy Bryant's little song defining the boomer generation ("And they all went to college and they got all the jobs and they made all the money and they bought all the houses and they won't ever die").

Completely unrelated but I was also wondering during the show -- is Jim Gaffigan is the most notable comedian working today who has never hosted SNL? For many years, my wish was for Lettterman to host. But I think my wish today would be Gaffigan.

There are lots of comedians I like who have never hosted but the only one I can think of whose stature is up there with Gaffigan is Bill Burr.

Letterman was asked to host but he declined. He thought he would be a horrible host but I would have loved to see it too.

Have only seen the Weekend Update section so far, but I'm really enjoying this update to the Andy Garcia Wikipedia page:

Most recently known for being mean to John Mulaney at a Laker’s game once.

Keenan in Obedient Husband, cowering like a guilty canine was brilliant physical comedy.

De Niro blamed his ex-wife for all the work he had to do, because she spent all his money.

Did someone drop out last minute? Halsey had about 3 lines all night. I’m guessing for good reason.

I liked the blackface sketch tho.

What are you talking about? She was in almost every sketch.

Yeah in every sketch and had one line. She featured in one sketch all night, the last one and it was awful.

Pretty sub-par show overall last night, but that blackface skit was great.

That was Villasenor's strongest night yet. In many sketches, and not in the background. She killed as Lady Gaga.

Update was good all around - guy who just bought a boat!

That show wasn't very good, overall.

In the last sketch, Pete Davidson looked a bit like Freddie Mercury

No. I think they realized Halsey can't act. She was a good sport about it but obviously in the blackface sketch, which was great, she probably was supposed to take some other lines but couldn't deliver so they allocated them to other people.

Okay, there have been a few great things tonight - the cake and the dog sketches. Don Cheadle is solid. Gary Clark Jr. has swag

and oh yeah....

Is it really that tough for SNL to find hosts? It almost feels like celebs just aren't interested in coming on the show anymore. They seem to have a lot of mediocre hosts and a lot of repeats. Didn't Mulaney just do the show like six months ago?

He hosted back in April of last year. That's a pretty quick turnaround for a hosting gig.

I agree, it does seem like a lot of mediocre hosts of late. Don Cheadle was pretty funny last night though. The cake baking contest sketch was the highlight. Just so unabashedly silly and over the top, and I laughed all the way through it. The dog commercial was pretty great as well.

Gary Clark Jr. was fantastic. It's pretty rare these days to see an actual guitar-oriented rock/pop band on SNL, and he delivered the goods and then some. Hell of a guitarist and songwriter. I can't remember the name of his first song, but he seemed to be channeling Prince on that tune. That was good stuff.
