Its funny that you mention that, because arent most of those guys registered with other teams?
Like Dustin Boyd and Nigel Dawes played in a tournament for Kazakhstan, can they come back now and play for Canada?

"KHL president Dmitry Chernyshenko said the International Olympic Committee "is destroying the existing world order in sports" by pursuing doping cases against Russians in other sports who are suspected of using banned substances around the time of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi".
What?

If the KHL pulls out, it would only be because they know there's no way the members of their Olympic team would pass drug tests

Russian parliament prepares a bill for the KHL so the league could forbid its players to participate in the Olympics including import players

Russia should be banned from any participation in any sport, any where, until they can prove the systemic cheating/doping they have been unleashing on the rest of the world has been completely dissolved.
That Icarus documentary is a must watch for anyone who thinks otherwise.

This could get very sticky/interesting because USA Hockey and Hockey Canada are firm in their belief Americans and Canadians in KHL are fully OLY eligible. Those USA/CAN players are in KHL on IIHF transfers; IIHF has sanctioned OLY participation:

This whole Olympic tournament is a complete farce. The way this is playing out the World Championship in May will be a much higher quality tournament.

I haven't followed it too closely but if Russian athletes were to be forced to compete under a neutral flag, how would that affect the hockey team?

I believe it would be up to the IIHF to allow it or not. If the IIHF gave a go-ahead, then such a team would compete under the IOC flag rather than that of a NOC.

That's too bad, I was hoping for plain white jerseys, hockey tape numbers, and ACDC playing as the pirate flag is raised during the gold medal ceremony.

If they can't compete under the Russian flag, could they compete as the Soviet Union? LOL

I agree, Icarus is a must watch. Although I do believe that the rest of the world may be just as guilty as Russia when it comes to doping. The Russian system for doping got sloppy and got caught. If a top athletes find out there is some new undetectable drug, that will make them stronger and quicker, they will probably be tempted to take it out of fear that their competition is taking exactly the same thing. Icarus shed light on how broken the entire system is.
It would be interesting to know how many programs have their own Rodchenkov in place, or if it was just an anomaly happening in Russia.

I can't wait until the 2020 World Cup of Hockey!
No IOC or IIHF nonsense ruining a great best on best tournament. I just hope next time it's hosted by multiple cities, with Calgary getting at shot at hosting at least a group game.

The Russians are 7-time Olympic champions so it's not like they've never won. Their gold medal drought is not as long as Canada's 50 year long drought (they last won in 1988).
Canadian smugness when it comes to international hockey is embarrassing sometimes. Are we forgetting 1998 and 2006?

They should really just make this a junior aged tournament in years where the NHL can't go.
Make it U-21, send the best junior aged players, and it least then your getting the best players of that specific age group instead of the worst.

At the very least, it's a nice win for diversity, since the women's tournament is gonna be a much bigger deal than the men's

I can't wait for the players and league to collectively bargain for Olympic participation in exchange for additional year on ELCs.
