I feel like there are easily junior players that are better than what made this team.
I'd take a young skilled guy like Jordan Kyrou over a Maxim lapierre any day of the week.

Was it pointless all the years prior to letting NHL players compete? Was the 1994 gold medal final between Canada and Sweden pointless? Was the 1980 'Miracle On Ice' Olympic tournament pointless? Give your head a shake. There have been so many riveting moments in Olympic hockey with and without NHL players. Don't sabotage your own chances to enjoy this tournament before it even starts.

With NHL participation you could choose this team with a Yahtzee cup or just draw names out of a hat, I think this is going to be interesting.
What would you do if you saw Theo Fleury's name on the team-sheet? Hes been playing beer-league...maybe Robyn Regehr?
|
I laughed when I saw Iggy mentioned here but this is just too much. Theo? Reggie? Lol
I know it's not the best players going but come on now

Willie Desjardins: I've never heard of half of these guys and the ones I do know are way past their prime.
Dave King: Most of these guys never had a prime.
Tom Renney: The fact is that we can't use NHL Players. And nobody seems to care to much about a tournament with a bunch of unknowns. Obviously it's time for some changes.
Willie Desjardin: This guy here is dead!
Tom Renney: Cross him off, then!

Yeah I don't get the complaints.
I love it that we get a bunch of 2nd rate fringe NHLers and AHL guys etc. Hockey won't be as high quality as it would if NHLers were there but we get to watch international hockey at odd hours at the Olympics.
What's not to like?

Vey is 3rd in KHL scoring...it's not like they are just taking randoms from the beer leagues.

Currently my interest is pretty low but I hope once the games start I will care more. That team looks pretty bad but I guess all other countries will have similar talent pools to choose from so maybe the team is "stacked."

Looking forward to Lubo's thoughts and analysis over the next couple months. I hope 960 gives him lots of airtime covering this team.

I disagree.
There's a reason those juniors are playing in the junior tournament and not in the NHL/AHL level (and this Olympics).
They're just not ready. And despite this roster not looking like an all-star team, it is a very solid hockey team. I expect a medal.

Willie Desjardin: [Willie's's talk to the team before the opening day game] All right people, we got 10 minutes 'till game time, let's all gather 'round. I'm not much for giving inspirational addresses, but I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves. Me, I'm for wasting sportswriters' time. So I figured we ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big poopburger to eat!
[entire team laughs]
Dave King: [Bourque arrives to spring training] There's Rene Bourque.
Willie Desjardin: He was on the all rookie team for Chicago a few years back?
Tom Renney: Yeah, wound up in the Mexican League. Had problems with his heart.
Dave King: Wish we had him two years ago.
Tom Renney: We did.

He is a Pole but has dual citizenship and is apparently ineligible to play for Poland now. I think he played for Poland in the last olympics though.

Wojtek Wolski? I thought he was Polish?
Thats quite the Rogue's gallery....
Rene Bourque and Maxim Lapierre representing their country. Heady times indeed...

The medal, should they win one, will count just as much as the one in 2014 did, the one in 2010 did, etc etc.
Hardly pointless.

Wasn't Kevin Poulin a baby Flames goaltender not that long ago? Rather large amount of former Flames on that team.
