Me too!

I mean, it was a second birthday present I’ve only been told and it’s been locked away pretty much ever since, but I have one, apparently.

I also have my name on a brick at Olympic Plaza I’ve never been able to find (though I’ve never given it an honest look).

I might not actually have any of the Olympic memorabilia my parents have told me about.

Suckers buying those coins, the smart money was on the pins.
My parent collected those pins thinking it was a gold mine.

Can’t get the province to fund needed things like a Red Deer hospital expansion. Why the hell would I want them to blow money on the olympics of all things?

Leave it to countries like Russia and Brazil.

Added to OP. Good point, and good choice by whoever created the poll.

No.

It’s a money pit, and a giant ego stroke for Nenshi.

The hypocrisy of funding a guaranteed billion dollar money loser which literally NOBODY gives a crap about a month later, and stonewalling the team that is the face of your city going on 40 years is ludicrous. (Although I’m sure narcissistic Nenshi thinks he’s the face of the city.) Especially hypocritical when the owners of said team actually contribute millions in hard cash to the community, while Mayor McTweets contribution is retweeting lost dogs, and accusing men and women 10x more successful and charitable of being greedy billionaires.

You guys know the decision has already been made, right? This WILL happen. Regardless of public input or protest.

And that has me pissed.

I collected and traded my pins back then for Olympic hockey tickets.

Nenshi wants this to be his legacy.

Putting on the Olympics now is a lot different then the 88 Olympics.

The cost and complications would be far more expensive then they were back then.

Holding the opening ceremony at McMahon would be pretty much a no go, we wouldn't get away with putting up temporary seats.

Even the technology requirements for the facilities is a lot more advanced.

Calgary spent 829 million dollars in 1988 if you do an inflation calculator that comes out to about 1.9 billion dollars

The latest Olympic games had a final price tag of 12.9 billion dollars after they estimated 9.5 billion dollars. The Olympic committee contributed about 880 million dollars

Vancouver's Olympics rang in at 6.4 billion US, and they made about 2 million in profit.

The Sochi Olympics had a price tag of about $50 billion, which is just stupid

Its just not worth it, most Olympics end up losing money, especially after the long term forecast of increased tourism doesn't happen.

At the end of the day, as much as the Olympic committee says, oh no the Domes ok, that's just to get Calgary on the bid list. They'll end up proposing a new hockey rink and a new multipurpose outdoor stadium to hold the opening and closing ceremony. Things like the bob sled track and the ski jumps probably aren't going to be usable.

Calgary made a profit on the last olympics because the Winter Olympics were the little brother of the Olympic movement. That's not the case anymore, and cost control goes out the window when you deal with Olympic committees.

I got to do the final sweep the night before the Olympics with the rest of my unit. We went through McMahon Stadium with a fine tooth comb.

I took a part time job with Wakenhut at night just for the Olympics and got to do standing security in the athletes lounge. I got to shake hands with Pepper.

There's no doubt to me it was a fun experience, but I just don't think it makes sense to do it again.

PS I still have every single pin that I traded and collected during the games, that was a cool thing.

Well that is pretty much the important figure, who cares how much the Russians and Chinese pissed away on vanity projects and facilities that will never be used again.

Even at 6.4 billion that's dollars that I really don't see a benefit in spending. I mean on the plus side, it would force the city to probably build a new arena and outdoor stadium.

But Vancouver had the benefit of already having a bunch of the in city facilities.

How much infrastructure would we have to build just to house the athletes.

Calgary had 57 nations come to the Olympics and 1400 athletes. The last Olympics had 92 nations and more then double the athletes if my math is right.

And by the time 2026 that 6.4 might be 8 or 9 billion.

Its a crazy amount of money to spend on a two week event.

Calgary has the benefit of even more in city facilities with what is left from the last Olympics.

We would certainly have to build infrastructure for the athletes but that isn't money down the toilet, that housing can be reused after the games.

The point isn't the "2 week event", it all comes down to dollars and cents. If the city can come even close to break even then we win with the legacy infrastructure.

I put in the vote for a plebiscite, just because I at least want democracy to have a strong voice on something this expensive and discretionary.

But I’d like to change it to No, because it isn’t a smart idea.

The Olympic bid was public knowledge last election. The public voted Nenshi back in. In a way, they have spoken.

Are you calling Nenshi s liar...

I really disagree with the idea that this was an election issue. It obviously wasn't.

wow, you have really drank the Kool-Aid haven't you?

I voted no - but I would be interested in a plebiscite - although great point about how a plebiscite should include more than just Calgary residents.

I just see this as another way for the government to saddle us with more debt.

Why are people talking about infrastructure when what is currently known about the bid has literally no meaningful infrastructure projects involved? That's the financial black hole of the Olympics, the only way to make it worthwhile is to continue to spend more money. Nevermind how revolting and disgusting the IOC is. We should probably talk more about hosting a corrupt group of criminals a bit more, it is pretty gross after all.
