I've still got my original Kings Quest V box, complete with the mail in 256 colour upgrade floppies. Man, was that an exciting treat when they showed up in the mail. The game came with 16 colour disks, but you could mail in for the 256 colour ones(which you totally wanted to do if your computer could handle it).

4. get a high paying job at the electronics factory
5. profit

all the jobs are blue collar in this game, aside from being a glorified bank teller.

Which of the King's Quest games was it where you had to clean a tree house (or something) and it took (what felt like) hours for the computer to go through the animation of it?

I've moved on to Mario Sunshine (20 years old, still vintage in my book) and it's quite the step backward from Mario 64. It feels like this is about where Nintendo took a hard right down the weird path while Microsoft and Sony raced on toward galactic hardware domination.

Pretty sure I still have my Gamecube copy. Playing Sunshine for a few hours has me thinking it's time I dug into my box of Nintendo junk to thin it out (some more).

Lots of fond memories of games; the first Far Cry and figuring out different ways to get to the end point; No One Lives Forever, which was a James Bond spoof with a female main character and some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a video game; Red Alert 2; and then going back to my Genesis days with the original NHL series, starting with NHL 92 which had no names, and then NHLPA 93 which I absolutely loved; Micro Machines; the green army soldier games for N64, along with Goldeneye and Rogue Squadron; so many fond memories and amazing moments.

Unless installing mods is super easy lol
I don't think it's hard, and I think the mods are all worth the minor initial hassle (better visuals that allow you to appreciate an otherwise 25+ year old game, more accurate translation helps with some plot points that might otherwise seem odd). But it's up to you. Either way, it's a classic

I mean, Nintendo’s won 2 out of 3 hardware generations since then by a landslide, and Microsoft can’t seem to give away Xboxes right now, so uhhh…

I have been using my laptop to play games lately. Its not great so i have been playing vintage games from my childhood for the nostalgia kick.

Age of Empires 2 still holds up so well and the amount of DLCs and extras they have added is amazing. There are like triple the amount of civilizations compared to the original release.

The original Command & Conquer (Tiberium Wars) is just as ####ing hard and frustrating as i remember. I remember getting that game in the 4th grade and was so excited. I rage quit so hard.

Basically every level requires a walkthrough of some sort. And the main strategy is to just rush the enemy base with engineers to take over their buildings. still so frustrating

Yes, I'm aware. I was simply observing the moment Nintendo began to carve out a new path and distinguish itself from their competitors by prioritizing unique, weird(er) gaming experiences over raw hardware power.

While Sony and MS focused on pushing the boundaries of graphical fidelity and processing capabilities, Nintendo embraced a different approach that emphasized creativity and unconventional game design and style. And it really shows in Mario Sunshine, especially when compared to Mario 64.

This shift eventually allowed Nintendo to (re)establish itself as a pioneer and powerhouse in the industry-- even though it took a few generations--proving that gaming experiences could transcend hardware specs.
