"Leaving the game alone" over the last few decades would have resulted in:
- the spread of xenophobia and homophobia
- allowing people's brains to rot without helmets and CTE preventative measures
- preventing Russians or any other Europeans from coming to the NHL
- a stagnation in women's hockey...
etc.
Heck, if we left the game alone, there would still be six teams and none west of Chicago, including Calgary.
Times change. Keep up.

I thought she was on NESN in the Boston area? Is she not doing that anymore?

Not to derail, but this is patently untrue.
Swedes and Fins, for example, have been playing in North America for 50 years or so. Not in great numbers to begin with, but that had way more to do with the way they played the game (and the size if the ice surface) vs what the NHL style was.
As for Soviets/Czechs etc...that was all because their governments of the time simply didnt allow them to come over with out defecting and having the great possibility of never seeing their families etc ever again with very few exceptions.
A really good read on it is a book called Breakaway.
Here is an old story about it all.

Changes are sometimes good but this is incorrect information. The NHL teams were trying to sign Russian players from day one. It’s the Soviet Union and communist Czechoslovakia that kept their players caged in and prevented them from playing in the west for money.
Furthermore although it has improved, they still allow brains to rot and woman’s hockey developed organically without NHL involvement.

Leah was 100x better than any one they have on the SN Flames panels now. The SN broadcast is generally so poor these days that I have started watch Flames games on a delay so I can skip through the crap in between periods.

Good article in the Athletic about what Leah Hextall has been up to and her efforts to break into hockey as a female PBP voice:
https://theathletic.com/1652343/2020...oadcast-booth/
Quote:
Hextall, 40, currently works full-time for the Premier of Manitoba as a communications staffer. That’s what she calls her “real job.” Meanwhile, on the side, she is “banging on doors” to get reps in play-by-play, which she says is “almost impossible.”
When she first set her sights on play-by-play, Emrick suggested she take a page from his book. When he started broadcasting in 1968, there was nowhere to practice, so he would take a recorder and sit alone at hockey games in Fort Wayne, Ind., and call the game to himself.
Based in Winnipeg, Hextall started showing up at AHL Manitoba Moose games and doing the same. Eventually, the Moose gave her a booth to sit in to call the games to herself. And this year, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League invited her to call their games live on a streaming service.
“It’s not a lot of bells and whistles,” Hextall said. “Getting reps is banging on doors and saying, ‘I’m doing this and I would love an opportunity’ and honestly, doing it for free. I just go do this. It costs me money, I’m driving an hour out of Winnipeg to go do this and it’s my own time and it’s not glamorous in any way, but if you want to get better, it’s the only way to get better.”

Meanwhile on the Oilers broadcast Gene Principe will be calling the game in drag.

Can someone clarify: is she Ron Hextall's niece? I don't think he's old enough to be her dad, but I keep seeing she's part of a hockey family. Just curious.

Ron's Cousin:

Hextall comes from deep hockey bloodlines. Her cousin Ron was the famed Philadelphia Flyers goalie; grandfather Bryan is in the Hockey Hall of Fame and her uncle Dennis also played in the NHL.
