Resurgence that made the team want to move on from him...

It would not surprise me.
For the "tight" defence Blaster claims they play, they sure allowed quite the volume of shots against in that Vegas series. Particularly that differential in game 7.
If that's how much you give up with this allegedly amazing commitment to Travis Green's super duper defensive structure, how many would they give up under a typical system?
That, or maybe the Canucks simply are just not a great team in their own end and Markstrom's .911 and .918 behind that group is way more impressive than its being made out to be by him to console himself on what is inevitably going to be a downgrade in moving on to Holtby.

If you're concerned about age, well Talbot is older.
Talbot finishes his contract with the Wild at 36 years old. Markstrom will be 35 at the end of his contract here.
Markstrom has also played less games than average for his age. Should have a decent amount of hockey left in him because of that.
Food for thought dude..

In what world is .918 elite? Or a 2.65 GAA.
He's not a late bloomer. He is a goalie. Which are notoriously hard to predict. There is no set growth path for goalies.

Behind a rebuilding team it is.
And by that logic then why take a chance on any one?
We might as well just continue the carousel of 1-2 year contracts to UFA journeymen to eliminate as much risk as possible.
Or do you eventually draw a line and stick with a guy.
They did, on the league-wide consensus #1 FA, and I'm glad.

I mean, hopefully they don't have to do that, but I've seen way worse.
Year 1 - $3,666,667
Year 2 - $3,666,667
Year 3 - $1,666,667
Year 4 - $1,666,667
With one year left it's:
Year 1 - $3,666,667
Year 2 - $1,666,667

To satisfy the cynics here, what is the calculation if we buy him out in 1 minute?

Yeah, but Vancouvers blueline is beyond a tire fire, its what happens if you take a pile of tires, soak it in napalm, and then detonate an atomic bomb in the middle of it.
Its like so bad, that the fly on Mike Pence's head look at it as a better pile to live on.
Yo Blueline is so Ugly that when Benning tried to enter them into an Ugly Blueline contest the organizers said "Sorry no professionals"
Yo Blueline is so slow that it took two hours for your defensemen to watch 60 minutes.

The only time you should give a guy with 4 points in 26 games $38M is when he’s a goalie.

I dont love it at first sight but I shouldnt judge right away. Goalies are hard to predict even in the systems they play. Osgood looked great playing for Detroit at one point in time.
I hope this deal turns the goalie position to a strength from a depth standpoint instead of a boat anchor contract. I personally would have signed a cheaper goalie and see if Rittich can take the next step with one more year under his belt.
If I am Rittich, I am probably wondering about the impact it has on his development

Can I just say it’ll be nice to finally know that I’ll see the same goalie for longer than 2 seasons?
The goaltending carousel has been going on for almost a decade. Thank goodness we have some stability in net.
It’s a year and mil too much (like others have said), but you’ve got to give to get. Hopefully Wolf (or some other goaltender) competes for the top goalie spot in year 5/6 of Markstrom’s contract.

Vancouver learned about the pitfalls of expensive long term contracts for goalies re luongo.
I guess it is our turn for that lesson now.
Treliving should be locked away with no means of communication on UFA day. He’s a good gm other than his judgement on UFAs

Chris Osgood went to back to back finals at age 35 and 36 with the Red Wings and his worst save percentage was .926.
He has a blip in his career where he goes from the best team in the league to the early 2000s Islanders, who are awful. He’s not Hasek, so he looks awful.
He goes to St Louis, with Pronger and MacInnis, and he puts up .910 in 67 games.
Chris Osgood is a borderline Hall of Famer, and probably deserves to be in. They’re so stingy about the goalies who get in, it’s a joke.

So because Vancouver signed a 12 year contract nearly 12 years ago, we’re not supposed to sign a guy to start for us until he’s 36, when a 37 year old man started every playoff game for us just a season ago?
Throughout that contract, Luongo’s ability as a goaltender was never really the issue. It was the 12 years part.

I want to be optimistic, but goalies are fickle. I just hope he does well and this doesn’t prevent us from making improvements to other parts of the lineup we need. Losing Brodie hurts and it’s not like we have a ton coming up this year.

The interview with Woodley from In Goal magazine today on the Fan was great.
He talks about their analytics show how a goalie does when it comes to specific types of shots.
He said they can then plug a goalie from one team into another and see how they'd do. He said Markstrom thrives at the types of shots Calgary allows (unscreened shots and breakaways), and would have allowed 50 less goals than Talbot and Rittich did. Apparently Markstrom lead the league in saving those types of shots.
He also said Talbot specifically struggles with what Calgary allows the most of.
Sounds like a really smart way to analyze new goalies, and like this might be a potential home run for the Flames.

Has Markstrom been good with these types of shots for a long time?
Or was it just last season?
If he has a long track record of this, it looks promising.
