Central air conditioning

I figured I'd ask this question here instead of a new thread. My new house has dual furnaces, and a thermostat on main floor and 2nd floor. I want to add a wifi thermostat.. wil I have to make them both wifi thermostats since its a dual zone? or... can I have one control both?

^ i woujd think that you would still require two thermostats.

if you had one thermostat, then i would think that both furnaces would be running at the same time.

even if there was a way to connect one thermostat to run two furnaces, i am not sure how the mainfloor thermostat would know what temp the upstairs currently and then how would the furnace know when to run or not run?

Yeah I talked to some friends and they said I'd need 2. I guess my next decision is to get 2 different brands of theremostat to help differentiate the floors, or, hope an app is smart enough to use 2 of the same nest or honeywell in the same home, but have seperate controls for both in one app?


I guess I could go honeywell and ecobee or bosch as a 2nd

Dual furnaces is extremely common. I would imagine newer, smart thermostats would be fully aware of this and have way of differentiating between floors. I really don't think 2 different models would be necessary.

If I'm wrong, that's a bit of an oversight.

A light google search (now you've got me curious) says the Nest thermostats can do this. Ecobees seem to utilize zone sensors....interesting. But ya, if you have 2 thermostats, 2 nest thermostats can do the job.

It's a part of the humidifier. You will know you found it because it is "damper" than the stuff surrounding it.

I had an AC unit installed last summer.

Turns out they installed the coil right in front of the take-off for the humidifier.

Now the Humidifier isn't seeing enough air flow to trigger the solenoid to add water to the evap pad.

Any options ??

Bump.

Been getting some quotes lately, and I had one person quote me on a side air discharge model rather than pretty much everything I see out there which is vertical air.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of side air vs. vertical air? From a technical specifications standpoint (efficiency, noise, airflow etc.) it seems like the side air discharge wins out, but obviously the vast majority of CAC's are vertical. Anyone know why?

I explored the mini-split units a couple of years ago. I don't remember the name of the vendor(s) I checked with, but I remember that the cost was going to be almost as much as a Central A/C unit for the entire floor, so it didn't make sense at all.

Do you have one furnace for the whole house, or do you have one per floor?

We have two furnaces, and we just got the one A/C unit for the upper floor. The main floor does get warm in the summer, but the upper floor was unbearable, even at night.

We don't run the upstairs A/C all the time though...if no one is upstairs, we just turn off the system from the thermostat, and switch it back to Cool mode in the evening. So your thermostat should give you that ability to only run the A/C on demand.

Has anyone shopped around this year for a new AC unit?
Ive requested a couple of quotes and reading online, people point to costco but then others say that costco really has nothing to do with it after the fact and you pay a premium while not receiving the costco support.

Also, are you able to get a smaller unit if you have dual zones (upper as 1 and main/basement as the other). I am assuming you are only requesting ac to one zone at a time but could be wrong on this.

I got a Goodman unit from Arpi's on Friday.

I bought from them at my old house, they were excellent to deal with and had the best price out of the three companies I got quotes from.

Fired mine up yesterday. My master bedroom faces south and it was 25 degrees at 4:00pm. Cooled down nicely outside so didn't need to run it long.

Is there anything special I should do to my unit prior to firing it up for the first time of the year? We moved in in the winter and haven't had a stand alone AC unit prior to this.
