As someone who follows the Hurricanes, I like this move. I think it’s a slight win for Calgary. Hopefully Klimchuk gets an opportunity in Toronto. There was just no way he could have made it here.

The Athletic has a good article on Nielsen from last year:

https://theathletic.com/92234/2017/0...ndrew-nielsen/

Quote:
If he can get his feet up to speed, and can find the strength to take advantage of his big frame, he could eventually tack a zero onto his AHL salary, and more. The potential is there. There’s a lot of work to be done, but if he’s willing to put it in – and he’s generally shown that he is – the NHL isn’t out of the question.

After all: you can’t teach 6-foot-3, and he can shoot the puck in the net.

I could see Nielsen playing in the NHL. He can move the puck and increasingly fights... The new NHL has these kind of guys as sheriffs... Not true heavies but guys who can play and stand up for teammates.

Heard his downfall is his defensive game needs work and the footspeed is not terrible but he can get torched by speedsters.

You’d hope for more in trading our number one prospect but Heat need a defenseman. Of course so do the Leafs so we may as well keep expectations in check.

Basically, he's a young Prout type guy who may turn into an Engelland.

I am good with this trade. I thought Klimchuk had a lethal wrister, but that was about it. Maybe it was the injuries that derailed his career somewhat, but he didn't seem to be on track at all to become an NHL'er.

I know nothing about Nielsen, but he sounds like something at least - a possibility for the NHL down the road, but at least important defensive depth for the Flames. I think the Flames are a bit flush with forwards at the moment at the NHL level and on the farm (though it would be nice to have a couple of blue-chippers in the system - but lots of guys with some NHL experience and a few with perhaps top 6 ability if things align properly).

This was the make it or break it year for Klimchuk on the Flames, and he was currently 10th in scoring for the Heat. Kylington has almost double the points (14) than Klimchuk (8). Maybe a change of scenery will allow Klimchuk to impress somewhere else and give him another NHL contract. He wasn't going to get another one from the Flames by the looks of it.

With the Stockton head coach change, is there any continuity for the staff responsible for developing the dmen? Did we have a specialized defensive coach, or was it predominantly Huska?

Yeah. But really what would we have done with him? At least he had a chance.

Big defensemen are always useful to have around.

It is crazy that the Flames have had 7 forwards from that first round of that draft. 2 of them were high picks that make up 2/3 of our top line so Monahan and Lindholm sate big wins. Poirier and Shinkaruk have already busted. Klimchuk might get a chance with the Leafs or someone else but his time is running out. By all accounts Lazar and Rychel are putting up decent numbers in the AHL but all these players are either already or turning 24 this year.

Flames scouts know him well from his time in the Dub, and they scout the AHL pretty intensively.
