If they went to 8 games the first round would pretty much have to be right after the season, and before Christmas. They cannot push into January for few reasons.
Another problem with expanding to 8 is that it diminishes the value of regular season games and therefore their importance (and level of interest). Currently every year there are some defacto regular season games (or in some cases Conference Championship games) that are essentially a playoff game. The loser is done. Think Michigan-OSU, Georgia-Alabama (sort of), OU-West Virginia or Washington-Washington State this year as an example. With the exception of Alabama (in regardless) and Washington (who had no chance to start with) the loser of each of these regular season games knew their playoff chances were over if they lost and there was a huge level of interest in the games. Expand to 8 teams and that may not be the case anymore.

To have a true national championship game, it should be an 8-team playoff, with the 8 teams being the champion from each of the following five conferences:
ACC;
Big 12;
Big 10;
Pac 12; and
SEC.
And the champion from the following three conferences:
AAC;
Mid-American; and
Mountain West.
The teams would be seeded by random draw of the hat, to be determined at the end of each regular season. So one year the SEC could be #1 going against #8 Big 12, even though both conference champs might be undefeated. It would all be based on the luck of the draw.
The 8 teams would play in 4 New Years Day bowl games, then two games the following week (ideally, on a Saturday), and then one last game a week later (also on Saturday, ideally).
But no "Independents" could force their way into the playoff, so if Notre Dame, or Army, or BYU, or the like want a chance to be named national champion, they've got to find a spot in one of the above listed conferences.
Such a scenario would be a lot cleaner and more honest than what we've got now, but that may be why it won't be happening anytime soon.

The only thing I would change is I would put the quarter final games the weekend after the Conference Championships, in December. Winners would play in the semis in two of the major bowls like they do now. Losers would still be eligible for the other New years Six bowl games.
I don't think it's feasible to push into January any further than it is now with second semester classes starting.

Fair enough, although the calendar could work in such a way (as in this year) to allow a two-week break between the Conference Championship and the quarterfinal games (such that they would have been held on the 15th of this year), and then the semis on January 1. That way, the teams get some recovery and preparation time between the games, but not so much time passes by that teams get rusty and/or general overall interest declines.

It will be 8 soon with the Quarters being before Christmas. Its been discussed too much not to be.
But the idea of the "conference champions" getting auto selected isn't a good one.

If you go 8 teams it has to be 5 conference champions and 3 at large. Maybe 1 of those 3 being guaranteed a group of five team.

Semi final Saturday.....feels like both games are going to be blowouts though im hoping OK can find something to exploit on Sabans defense cause they are going to need to score to have any chance.
Been watching a bit of Michigan getting absolutely clocked by Florida....hilarious.

Plan accordingly SEC officials are working the Cotton Bowl. Very incompetent. They also hate Clemson.

Stack the deck in ND's favor as much as they want and I still don't see the South Benders finishing within 10 points of Clemson.

I quite enjoyed how they kept pounding the “#1 defence in the country” bit without mentioning they were missing their two most important players. Alas that doesn’t explain the offensive ineptitude, that can be explained by saying Harbaugh, Pep, and Jesus Christ can we please stop with this 1992 fullback offence business?
Ah well there’s always next year.
...next year won’t be better.

So I haven't watched every game, but it seems - from the ones I've seen - the only good bowl game so far this year was the Alamo bowl last night.
Hopefully these bigger games come through.

Mostly unimpressed with Clemson so far. Tough to see them staying within three touchdowns of Alabama.

Notre Dane way too conservative. Don’t have a chance playing like that.

They need their safeties back in there too, that's the strength of that back unit. Clemson clearly has noticed they are out as they are a lot more comfortable slinging it deep now

Yeah this is basically worst case scenario for the Irish. Injuries thin out their D and the offence is sputtering. Knew they wouldn’t hold Clemson in check every drive but if they keep giving up big plays this one will be over soon.

I know you cant keep an undefeated ND team out of the playoff based on nothing more than the eyeballs they bring to the tv screen.
But what was their signature win this year? Syracuse?
Michigan was a fraud, as was Stanford. Va. Tech was OK but beyond that....dogs breakfast time.
Least impressive resume of any playoff or BCS team ever maybe?
