Maybe I misinterpreted prior season. I was under the impression prior season would be the 2021 FedEx standings if this new structure was going on currently. They do talk about events mid season and post season.

Also, I really don't get what the PGA is doing here. They spent years reworking the calendar to avoid competing with the NFL, and now this? In the fall? Plus it's too many events and still not enough money which was the problem in the first place.

Wonder if Rahm is going to play in these new no cut tournaments with no history? Does the huge purse make it "golf enough" for him?

Scheduling these events in the fall is a giant FU to the DP World tour, two of their biggest tournaments are in November. Maybe they will let the LIV guys play with them; that pretty much makes the row over OWGR points irrelevant.

So in the end the fans are going to get a worse product, while the players, regardless which tour they end up on, will get more money. Fun.

Also, how right was Phil? "I'll get into bed with the Saudis for leverage", and sure enough it worked, even if not how he thought it would.

Yeah this is great for the players who are making all the money. Nothing good for the “game of golf” as Norman and others like to trumpet so just seems to me this will ultimately lead to less interest in the game. Unless you believe the Saudis will fund this indefinitely, I suspect fans will look back at this as a bunch of greedy players who preceded the erosion of fan interest in the game.

Maybe LIV changes things up but I don’t see 54 hole shotgun starts as anything more than an exhibition. I can’t think of any reason to watch.

I wonder if double elimination/cut tournaments would make things more interesting for golf fans. Cut the field on Friday to 60 or 70 and play groups of three on Saturday. Cut to 36 or 44 for the final round and play groups of two. I could see this potentially increasing the level of competition in tournaments and it also should bring coverage time down to about 6 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

They already have a second cut if more than 78 players make the cut.

Are smaller fields really something that fans care about? Whether the final round is 8 hours or 4 hours, I can choose when to start watching. I suppose pairs is quicker than threesomes but that can just put the leaders further apart in the course which isn’t great.

This ESPN article has some more details on the revamped PGA schedule including going back to a calendar year season.

https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id...iv-golf-threat

The DP world tour is a bit of a wild card. As mentioned in this article, they are hoping to create closer ties between PGA tour and DP World tour with the new schedule and maybe some of these new events. If the PGA/DP solidify their partnership, and liv can't get any top 10 players to jump, it's hard to see liv lasting too long.

I find it hilarious the PGA has “found” some money for a top 50 player circuit.

Looks like the PGA and DP have solidified their alliance. If they continue to keep the top 15 or so out of the liv, it will remain an irrelevant, exhibition league where players go when they are put out to pasture.

Even more hilarious is the field at the John Deere.

Gligic with 64-69 to sit T4. Projecting 138 in FedEx Cup standings.

With some good play on the weekend he could get into the Open and snag even more FedEx Cup points.

Morgan Hoffman is playing well and should make the weekend.

Christopher Gotterup playing nicely on a sponsor's exemption. He's not a member so needs a win to make the playoffs.

As ####ty as the field is there are lots of compelling stories this week.

Gligic sh*t the bed on the back nine finishing his last 5 holes in +3. Left a lot of FedEx points on the table this week.

Gotterup finished T10 and is into the Barbasol next week.

No comments on the Open yet?

I thought Tiger might have a good tournament in him this week. Sure doesn't look like it.

Hopefully Rory can stay in contention all four rounds.

You never see as many as golf is more of a live watching sport. You don't see a lot of people recording and then watching like a hockey game.

Of note, there's four LIV players in the top 10 after the first round.

I watched the early, early first round on Sky Sports. They legit showed one commercial every 30 mins. It was glorious.

Watching the start of the Open is kinda cool, because they don't do split tees, so you basically see every shot the first group plays until hole 4 or 5.

Martin Slumbers' presser on Wednesday was something else. I've not heard a governing body come out that hard against LIV, the USGA sure didn't. (I don't view PGA Tour as a governing body). Really good presser, highly recommend if you are a golf nut. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at the OWGR committee meeting.

I took Rory, Hatton, Detry, Burmeister, Fleetwood and Tiger in my pool.

I kind of enjoy the pomp and circumstance of playing at St. Andrews, but it's too easy a course at this point with how much guys can overpower it. If the wind isn't up the winner should be at -20 or so.
