I actually thought he did a pretty good job last season when you consider how bad their goaltending was. If he was still available in the offseason and the Flames were looking I would have been totally fine if they hired him.

To be fair, Tatar is really the only one to make him look silly for it though. Gusev is fine, and Shipachyov immediately left for Russia (has been over a PPG since returning though). You could also argue Gusev was just a victim of the salary cap.
The Knights got Pacioretty by trading Tatar +... I don't think Gallant looks silly at all.

Some players just don't fit with certain teams, Tatar with the Knights was one of those cases.

Tatar was basically a throw in to that trade to make the cap work though. That + you mentioned was Nick Suzuki (13th overall pick in 2017) and a second round pick.

So including the picks they gave up for Tatar they spent a first round pick, two second round picks, a third round pick, and a top prospect to bring in a 30 year old Pacioretty.

He’s had a nice bounce back offensively this season to be fair, but he only had 40 points last year.

Pacioretty and Tatar have basically the same points per game percentage since the trade.

Even Suzuki is chipping in with 0.56 PPG as a rookie in Montreal.

Gallant/Laviolette likely won't be heading to Dallas this season:
