So are you suggesting they keep their team together by not signing their players? Bold strategy. Might have a kink or two in there that needs to be hashed out though.

The Jets end up with not a lot of cap space for long term 6M + deals.

They have Trouba, Morrissey, Laine and Connor that would get a 6x6 with some team today.

The Jets have 27 M available next year with only 11 players signed.

I would expect that the Jets pick 1 or maybe 2 of the big 4 to sign long term and give the other 2/3 bridge contracts.

Trouba one more year of controlled salary
Morrissey 4 more years of controlled salary
Laine / Connor 5 more years of controlled salary.

The last 2 years being subject to arbitration.

That is a pretty big window.

When they get to the last year of controlled salary the Jets will be forced to trade these guys... Next year for Trouba.

It is hard to imagine what sort of trade value these guys will have in 3 years.

Patrik Laine’s camp would balk at a 6 x $6.0 m contract offer. He is a $10.0 m player right now.

I disagree with those who say this is a good deal for the first few years and bad for the latter years. That's not how contracts work. Gms aren't idiots. They know players will decline. The proper way to parse the contract is on a sliding scale, such as 11-11-8-5-5. That is more indicative of how the gm views the player. The contract is very fair.

Comparing this contract to others from 4+ years ago is also problematic, particularly the long 7+ year terms. Players who sign long term deals have to take a discount as an insurance against injury and an uncertain salary cap. If you want to compare Wheeler to Crosby, imagine that Crosby had one year left on his deal and what his contract extension would look like. That's a better method.

It's fair, I suppose, if you think he is worth $11M for the next 2 years. I do not.

Jets are in an interesting place IMO. Almost where they are between 2 cores.

Scheifele ($6.125; 25), Ehlers ($6.0; 22), Lowry ($2.9; 25), & Hellebuyck ($6.16; 25) are all young and signed to reasonable deals IMO (especially Scheifele).

Laine (20), Connor (21), Roslovic (21), Trouba (24), Morrisey (23) make up the rest of that young core and all of them require new contracts in the next 2 seasons.

But now they have an aging "Core" taking up big chunks of cap:

- Byfuglien: 33 years old - 3 years at $7.6M
- Wheeler: 32 years old - 1 year at $5.6M, then 5 years at $8.25M
- Little: 30 years old - 6 years at $5.3M
- Perreault: 30 years old - 3 years at $4.125M

So a lot of money in the 30+ group with $23M (up to $25.2M next year) tied up in those 4 players during a period where those 5 young guys are all going to need BIG raises.

Then even crazier is that they don't have anybody in that 25-30 ranged signed long term - only player with more than a year left in that age group is Kulikov with 2 years left on his contract. Plus Tyler Myers who is expiring at $5.5M and will need to be replaced.

Will be interesting to see how it all works out for them...IMO they are actually kinda lucky that Statsny ended up spurning them and signing in Vegas. I'm not sure that another 3 years and $6M+ would have looked good in their cap situation.

Also would love to have been a fly on the wall what they could have received in a trade for Wheeler (and Little last year) if they decided to sell them with a year left in their contract opposed to re-signing them.
