The Flames have gone all in on this season, and pretty much have 3 years with the current D group to win.
They aren't shooting themselves in the foot this season by dealing their #2 center for magic beans that have no way of helping for at least the next 3 seasons.
Not unless there is an adequate replacement coming back that doesn't leave a gaping hole down the middle of the forward group.

Yeah, it's going to be cheaper to buy Brouwer out than retain salary in a trade (both in real dollars and cap hit). If someone really wants him for cheap they can get him next year without giving up an asset.

Don't know where to put this but fun fact about the Backlund pick in the 07 draft traded for Keith Tkachuk.
Quote:
2007-Feb-25 Traded from Atlanta Thrashers with round 1 pick in the 2007 draft (Mikael Backlund), round 3 pick in the 2007 draft (Brett Sonne) and round 2 pick in the 2008 draft to St. Louis Blues for Keith Tkachuk

Paul Byron is a guy who I think Flames should try and acquire.
Shouldn't cost too much, maybe Poirier and Wotherspoon?
Brings a lot of speed to the fourth line, will help the PK immensely, and has chemistry in the room.
That's all i'm hoping to add to this team. Upgrade the team speed with a useful and versatile player.

I would love to get byron back but could you imagine the uproar three years ago if someone floated the idea of poirier and wotherspoon for byron? Would have been burned at the stake haha

Like the Byron idea but i think Treliving will move backlund for a wing and the use the goaltending defensive depth to reshore up the center position.
I dont think Backlund gets resigned unfortunately and i dont think Treliving will trade for anything but a young up and coming cost controlled assett. Hes given up picks so unless he gets picks vack for Backlund they will still be thinking of the future.

The more i think about it the more it makes sense. The emergence of Janks as already a middle six player would allow you to trade Backs for upgraded right wing. Then use your defensive depth and goaltending to pick up a middle pair center.
Johnny.mony.ferly
Bennet.janks. mystery box winger
Tkachuk mystery box center. Frolik

Yeah it’s kind of starting to feel like Backs may not be in the long term plans. Zero basis for that and complete speculation mind you. Backs is likely gonna go for big term and big dollars (can’t blame him). It’s also getting fairly close to the trade deadline which would you’d think is when Treliving is gonna fish or cut bait with Backs. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Yea I hear ya, just kinda sucks that it might come to that, he's really been a consitent 2-way player that benefits the younger guys as well. But big term and $ on him could be problematic down the road...

The tax rates between Florida and New York are vastly different. For someone to take home the same pay as Stamkos playing in New York would be comparable to 10M.
It was even bigger in Toronto. For Stamkos to bring home the same pay in Toronto he would have had to have a 11M+ contract while giving up his 8th year. Financially, it made the most sense for Stamkos to stay in Tampa, so this is not at all a similar situation.

Raiola calculated that if Stamkos takes $8.5 million with the Lightning, it would net almost the same annually as $10 million in New York, presuming he'd be a New York City resident (see chart).

Tavares could always take a hometown discount, but there's teams out there lining up to pay him 12M. People still think it's 2006 when it comes to salary cap.
Iginla making 7M when the cap was 39M was 18% of the cap. Ovechkin making 9.5M when the cap was 56.7M was 17% of the cap. Kane making 10.5M when the cap was 71.4M was 15% of the cap. Tavares at 12M would be between 15 and 16% of the cap.
Even as good as Jamie Benn was when he signed his 9.5M contract, he's no Tavares.

I don't think Treliving lets Backlund go. The window is the next 3 or 4 years while Johnny is still here. If Tre has to give Backlund a 5 or 6 year deal, he will do it. For the first 3 years, Backlund should still be a good player and by the last two years, whether the Flames have won a cup or not, Treliving will probably be gone anyways and Backlund's contract will be someone else's problem.
There is no replacement for Backlund. Tavares is not signing here. ROR will cost too many assets to acquire. Tre will sign Backlund and go all in the next 3 years.

Giving Backlund 5x5 is not going all in.
Going all in would be letting Backlund walk and throwing $12M at Tavares - if that were to happen, we just put the league on stand by that we want the cup

If you could, you have to let Backlund walk to get Tavares. There's just no guarantee you can get Tavares though. If a sign and trade could happen it would be a dream come true. Having Tavares, Monahan, Jankowski as your center depth would be unreal. Backlund would become expendable and one of the D or a prospect would have to go too. Again, 99% cha de it doesn't happen but that would be sick if it did.

Why wouldn't Byron cost plenty?
Great bottom 6 player, who will get you 20 goals playing 5v5, kills penalties, a cap hit slightly more than $1M and signed for next year.
You are getting him for 2 players who likely will never play much in the NHL.
His value is likely a first round pick, or maybe 2 seconds.

2 goal in his last 14 games, 16 points on the season. He's not getting you a first rounder.

The last season and and half determines his value, not his last 16 games.
20 goals scored 5v5 playing bottom 6 minutes is pretty impressive, as is his cap hit.
He certainly won't be given away.
