There have been talks I don't think anything is going to come out of it. Treliving is no dummy to do a straight across trade. Holland and Co believe Bennett can be a different player with his childhood buddy.

There is an opinion piece on the Athletic, but it appears to be by their blogger level guys, not the legit guys (like Duhatchek or Lebrun for example) who came to the site by virtue of being insiders / journalists
I am not aware that it is being discussed by anyone that matters

The only information I’ve been able to find about something like this have been from the Athletic and some throwaway Staples article, both discussing why the respective teams might do it, not that it’s actually been discussed.
The fact that Staples thinks it should happen might be a powerful clue that it absolutely should not. It only benefits the Oilers.

Taking a while to get to 5000

The concept of moving Bennett as a means of saving money that can go towards another contract has merit. The Flames are flush with LW talent, Bennett will most likely get a salary of at least $2.5M. Dube & Mangiapane will fill out the left side. Bennett would have to get a promotion to 2RW or he sort of falls off the map. The idea of him being dealt shouldn't be one that stuns anybody. For Puljujarvi? There have to be other, better deals if thats the road they choose to go down.

Other than the article written in the athletic I highly doubt it.
What a brutal trade that would be for Calgary

Even Tre can't let Holland bend him over twice in one week?

No he would still be RFA. He only has 4 accrued seasons of service time. The Flames burned a year off his entry level deal the first year by going past 9 games. But since he played less than 40 games it was not an accrued season. Player needs 7 accrued seasons of service time to be UFA.

Yeah depending on the levels they present to the arbitrator that has to be a close comparable. Since it tends to still be traditional counting stats that are used with arbitrators here are the last two seasons for each guy:
Copp:
GP: 151 G:20 A:33 P: 53 +/-: 37
Bennett:
GP: 153 G: 24 A: 29 P: 53 +/-: -24
That should pretty much set Bennett's market perfectly.

I think there is enough out there for Bennett to be signed before his hearing in 4 days.

2 x 2.25 isn’t too shabby for Bennett if it comes in around that.

Good comparable for Bennett to use in arbitration

I’m going to have to disagree. I think Compher is a better player. Although, with Kadri at 2C that either moves Compher to W or 3C. His upward trend could stall because of that.

speaking of arbitration,
Arbitrator awards Jets' Copp 2 years, $4.56M
https://www.tsn.ca/arbitrator-awards...-56m-1.1341177
According to Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press, Copp asked for a one-year, $2.9 million contract from the arbitrator, while the Jets countered at a two-year deal worth a total of $3 million.
The 25-year-old Copp scored 11 goals and posted 25 points for the Jets this past season.
maybe Bennett would be better off not signing and taking his chances with the Arbitrator.

I didn't even know the arbitrator could give 2 years and at a lower AAV than either side proposed. Bizarre.

it isn't, though. Jets wanted 1.5 per year, he got 2.28 AAV

Shocklingly almost exactly halfway between the two sides. The difference might just be less than it cost to do the arbitration (2 lawyers plus arbitrator).

Sadly, i thought the exact same thing about the Athletic articles suggesting Lucic for Neal was a possibility.
i think this would be a ghastly trade for calgary....
an established NHLer, of the type calgary doesn't have enough of, for a guy who is not even an NHLer... That would be a dumb trade.
pursuing Puljujarvi is fine, but you do it with assets with a similar level of risk or uncertainty... certainly not Bennett

Seriously, a Bennett for pool party deal would be atrocious.
