Winnipeg had a higher population than Calgary in the early 80’s. The Olympics wasn’t the only thing that pushed Calgary’s economic development forward, but it certainly helped. Today Winnipeg has about half the population of Calgary.
We can always count on you to monitor tweets for something that will help push your anti olympics stance.
How do you even know she meant that tweet in a derogatory sense?

Besides everyone knows it was the ski of an errant jumper that pierced the ground and kicked off the first major oil discovery in the province, Leduc #1.
does anyone honestly believe it wasn't a cheap shot?
It doesn’t matter what your interpretation of her tweet is. It matters what she meant by it.
Maybe she meant “do we want to be an average Canadian city like Winnipeg or do we want to stand out on the world stage”? It’s subjective until she explains her message.

thank you for making this observation, it funny because it is true.
i would have to think that if you take away the 88 olympics, COP may not exsist in iot's present form, neither would the oval, and perhaps the olympians do not live here, otherwise, i think calgary would pretty much look the same.
of course, i am ignoring the worldwide prestige factor that calgary enjoy's.

Calgary is Calgary because of Oil and Gas. Alberta is Alberta because of Oil and Gas. Without O&G Calgary wouldn't even be Winnipeg, we'd be lucky if we were Saskatoon.
It bugs me to see the constant comparisons to 88 when it's a completely different world in terms of cost and security threats 30 years later. I'm glad that Olympics went well for the people who were around at the time but it doesn't mean the Olympics are a good idea now.

...and when the IOC has to resort to propaganda like this, you know this bid is in deep trouble...
...end of the day, this whole process has been embarrassing for basically everyone involved in it. If there weren't already $30-40 million sunk into this thing, they would scrap it. Instead they'll spend the last couple weeks throwing Hail Mary's to save it.

I really hope the day comes soon that no country wants to host the games, and the IOC is forced to shut down. Nothing can save that organization from it's own corruption, we're at the point where it should be left to burn to the ground and something new can start fresh

I'm guessing we will see a 70-80% no vote on the plebiscite. That's my gut feeling.
With the real amount being in the 55-65% range, but No voters are much more motivated.
The no vote is just a squeakier wheel. If we’re talking about gut feelings then my gut feeling is that they are a minority that is louder. Nothing else.

Pretty sure the Yes side has never been above 50% in the poll, and it's support has collapsed in the last few weeks as all the details are coming out. It had like a 10 point lead, and now it's just over 5%. And we still have the Feds coming up short on their contribution to depress the Yes support even more (FYI the IOC announced today no more money will be given to Calgary for the bid). No doubt the No side is louder, but the Yes side has simply done a very poor job of making their case. In fact, they've really made no case whatsoever other than "Trust us, it'll go fine because....1988....or some such ####". Maybe the Yes side has tons of quiet support, but given the town hall "votes" have been one way traffic against the bid, it's more likely people simply don't want this.
