I came on to suggest the Robert Heinlein books as well, like "Have Space Suit, will Travel". Thing is, those books are pretty dated by now, not sure how a kid will react to that sort of thing.

As for the books on some of these lists, there are some really good ones on them. John Christopher (the Tripods, and Beyond the Burning Lands) were ones that I have good memories of that might be ignored nowadays. Susan Cooper, while not Sci-Fi, was awesome as a kid, especially Over Sea, Under Stone.

I remember reading My Teacher is an Alien as a kid, pretty sure that is science fiction.

My Teacher Glows in the Dark
My Teacher Fried my Brains
My Teacher Flunked the Planet

Are the rest of the books in the series.

My son is reading 'the missing' series at school and seems to like it. He said it's not as good as Harry potter (his gold standard) but he likes the time travel.

"Flowers for Algernon" was a good short story (later adapted into "The Lawnmower Man"). I think Asimov's "The Positronic Man" is also pretty accessible as a youth literature story. There are some heavier themes in the book, but I am not sure if they detract much from the story.

Harry Potter is also a great series for kids (and adults). I got my 7 year old to read the first book, but I think some of it was too drawn out for his shorter attention span. There is this whole series of short books called "Magic Treehouse" that he gets excited over. They are various fantasy stories with two protagonists that are common through the entire series.

If your son wants to have a conversation with an Author to get excited about reading something.

Arthur Slade:
"I'll be doing an Ask Me Anything from 5-7PM EST (or 3-5PM Central) on Reddit.com So come ask me: steampunk, YA Books, football "

A few books might be a couple years older for him but my Nieces LOVE them.
