Default Japanese Restaurant Recommendations

Just wanted to pose a question to CPers about which Japanese restaurants you would recommend in Calgary. My wife and I have had mixed luck since moving here from Vancouver 3 years ago with some good (Sakana Grill, good but a tad pricey) to bad (Sushi King).

What do you recommend?

Are there any good all you can eat places out there?

Which restaurants compare to the quality you can get in Vancouver?

Which has the best value?

Thanks in advance.

Have not eaten there in a couple of years, but was good.

Tough to compare sushi to Vancouver, I like Zipang and Wa's. For value, Momoyama is pretty good.

I'm not sure how it compares to Vancouver or higher-end sushi restaurants in town, but we always go to Midori (on 17th and 10th St SW). Partly because it's close, but also seems to be of decent quality.

I like Shibuya Izakaya. Their beef tataki is amazing. Great spicy tofu and takoyaki, and they have oyster specials Monday to Thursday. Their sushi selection is quite good as well.

We like Globefish for the rolls. Rarely have more traditional sushi there so can't comment on that.

Wa's and Momoyama.
Both are great.

Globefish has gone waaaaaay down hill.
Don't bother.

Wa's and Misato are my favorites.

Liked zipang as well but found it pricey.

Kinjo by Dalhousie Station has my vote. A little pricy, but I've always enjoyed the food there.

Plus, if you go with your wife, she gets free Pocky. I've never figured out why.

Check out http://www.shikiji.ca/ on Centre Street. If you're looking for some great sushi and the absolute BEST Ramen I've anywhere since being in Japan you can't go wrong. I Second the recommendation for Red Ember.

Zipang is great. For a cheap experience, Kinjo is surprisingly good for more of a franchise-type place.

Yes, I second Shikiji. It's awesome! I also like Sushi Club in Kensington, the fish there is extremely fresh and they have a decent selection. For take-out that's on the cheaper side, check out Sushi & Co. in downtown. It's a hole in the wall type of place, but damn is it good.

Globefish is good if you like the taste of cockroach in your california roll. Kinjo is also horrible.
