hold them in a neutral location, or play em all in the visitors barn. no exhibition games when everyone else is playing them is starting your team 1 step behind.

They should at least try and get in a couple of games against UBC.

I agree.
Right now, the only game-like action they're going to get is on October 5th when they run a a couple hour long red vs. white game.

Woohoo! The training camp schedule is out and the teams have been made.
Off-ice testing and medical assessments are on the 27th and 28th. The first on-ice session will be Saturday and go until October 5th when the red vs. black game will happen.
Lots of unfamiliar names on each team.

Interesting Steve McCarthy got invited to camp. He played last year in ZSC with Bob Hartley. Wonder if he will make the team like Kolanos last year?

McCarthy was definitely an interesting name that popped out at me. He has a full season of NHL experience too playing with the... Canucks.
Mark Isherwood also sounds like an interesting name. He's 22 and from Abbotsford. He put up very nice numbers in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers. And while his numbers dropped off a bit when he turned pro, he still got 15 goals and 20 points at the ECHL level. Not too bad. It'd be nice to get some offense on the blueline that isn't named Brodie, because lord knows that kid is going to carry that blueline offensively.

Lots of NCAA kids on try-outs. Weisbrod's fingerprints?

No doubt. Maybe a bit of Ward as well.
The Heat have stepped their game up from last season's training camp. Last season they didn't provide the public with names or numbers. Now they're giving us both.

McCarthy was an up-and-comer with the Thrashers at one time. This would definitely be considered a reclamation project.

I seriously think we should ask Robert Dome to come back. That would be EPIC.
EDIT: Even better, we should get this guy - Evgeny Galkin. Plays forward with Chelyabinsk Traktor (Trailer) of the KHL. The mis-representation of the name alone will be money in terms of marketing for Abbotsford.

Isherwood was a real heart and soul guy for the Tigers. It's been a few years, but he had a bomb of a shot, and is a decent passer. I don't think his skating ability is AHL calibre though. Nice to see him get a shot, but I don't think he's good enough to provide more than a PP specialist role at the AHL level.
Really liked him on the Tigers, and I'd be more than happy to eat my words if he makes it.

Irving has been added to the Heat's training camp roster:

The Abbotsford Heat announced today the addition of Leland Irving to its roster of players attending its American Hockey League training camp. Irving played 39 games with the Heat during the 2011-12 season and 7 games in the National Hockey League with the Calgary Flames.

Vicki Hall @vickihallch
Irving signed an AHL professional tryout agreement with Heat, so he didn't have to clear waivers...

So I just read that Steve McCarthy is a little bit more than a training camp tryout, he was actually signed to a PTO. I guess that can't be a bad thing. With such a young Heat team expected this season, it can't hurt to have a guy who has played 302 NHL games on the roster.
Also, don't forget, McCarthy was the guy who scored the game-winning goal with 2.5 seconds left in the game to win game 7 of the Swiss playoff finals last season for Bob Hartley's ZSC Lions. Clutch.

It's definitely not bad, but I have to admit the amount of bodies in the AHL concerns me, we are going to have some decent guys down in the ECHL.
We have what?
Irving, Taylor & Brust in goal. Brust will be the loser and go to Utah.
Lamb, Martin, McKelvie, Breen, Callahan, Brodie, McCarthy, Tuzzolino & Piskula on the blueline. I have no idea how this will play out but 9 defensemen is quite a bit and I could even be missing lesser known guys on AHL deals or PTOs
Estoclet, Kolanos, Street, Bouma, Laing, Byron, Wahl, Nemisz, Walter, Sylvester, Horak, Cameron, Eddy, Reinhart, Ruegsegger, Howse, Aliu, Patterson, Bancks, Ferland & Baertschi fighting for jobs up front. 21 bodies up front, wow. I think it's a given that Cameron and Patterson will be in the ECHL and Wahl will probably be put on loan again. But that still leaves 18 giys all of whom are AHL capable.
I guess I will look at the bright side, the Grizzlies should be incredible this year.

Ward was quoted as saying he wants 13 healthy forwards, 8 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Whatever you want to take from that, go for it.
All I know is I don't want to be the coaching staff making the cuts.

I like this. I like that Ward is going to have him more than ready to be a regular NHLer:
Quote:
“People may be like, ‘oh, here comes Sven. Let’s do this for Sven and let’s do that for Sven,’ ” Ward says. “I’m on a different page. Let’s let Sven do what he’s supposed to do. Let him earn everything he gets.
“We’re not going to throw out the red roses here because he’s coming.”
Don’t get Ward wrong. He doesn’t intend on being a jerk to the top prospect in the organization. He just wants the kid to undergo a crash course in the fine art of succeeding in professional hockey.

FYI: I should be chatting with Ward sometime in the next 2 weeks for THW. If anybody has any particularly burning Qs they want addressed, let me know (either here for via PM).
Troy's always a fun interview. I'm quite interested to see how he's approaching Year Two as bench boss in Abby.
