I'm guessing that like most MMOs, it will take you hours and hours (or even days or weeks of work) to be able to work up enough credits to afford one of the larger ships.

You have to ask yourself, do I want to have the game as a second job or should I rather work a real job for a couple of hours to pay real money for a ship. For me, my time is more valuable than money so I don't mind spending a few real dollars to accelerate my progress in the game if that means less grind and provides a game where I can play more at my leisure.
Haha this is the part that could annoy me about this game (warcraft style farming). Such a market driven thing.. I can see third world countries working real hard at this game lol.

Still, I think I'll sign up as it looks like a lot of fun

And newbies likely won't get out of hi-sec space very easily in their Aurora's and whatnot.

Initially, they will be hired on as freighters to haul for NPC corps, crewmen on NPC/PC vessels, or as Freelancers running errands for corps in loaner ships (which they wouldn't pay for anyway).

Eventually, they can save up for their own ship (which they better buy insurance for!).
I like the idea of starting as a crewman on a ship with the whole romantic dream of owning a ship of my own. I'd work incredibly hard, slaving my fingers to the bone as a turret gunner on a big ship. Then I'll get that final paycheck and go buy my ship. then return to coldly shoot my former ship out of the sky and blast all of the escape pods.

Is buying a ship like selecting a class in an MMO? I went for the 350r simply based on the fact they were going to stop selling it soon, but I'm worried all I'll get to do in it is race and suck at everything else.

Not really, as you'll be able to buy different ships through the course of the game. You could be like "#### this, racing and exploring isn't enough for me this week!" and dock your ship somewhere, and join up on a bomber and become a spotter for awhile.

As well, I can honestly see your ships upgrades really making the ship. The base ships on their own have their strengths, but they will definitely me moddable.

Fast ships aren't just for racing. They'll be excellent ships for smuggling or transporting time sensitive cargo

I bought my fast ships to out-run attackers.

I have to say, that was a great interview. I also read the linked article on the RSI website within the article about how they are dealing with death and I think it is very interesting, I can't wait to see it in action.

I'm going to see if I can come up with the funds to upgrade to a MISC Freelancer before the end of November.

So I'm reading some conflicting reports. When is/was the last day to jump in on the LTI package?

For new backers the ability to buy ships with LTI ended last month. For people that had already backed previously to that, they are still able to buy ships with LTI until this November

That said, the devs have commented that it's very likely you'll see future LTI promotions when more ships become available

For new backers, that date has passed.

People who are already backers can buy LTI packages/ships until November 26th, 2013.

However, I've heard that if you know someone who is a backer they can "gift" others an LTI package. I've not done this myself though so I'm not sure.

It's hard to know if it's worth getting LTI since we don't know the cost of regular insurance in context of the game economy do we?

I mean if insurance is cheap enough then it's not a big deal to not have LTI.

This is it exactly, the devs have already said that insurance won't be a huge expense. All LTI is, is a way for them to "give a small token of gratitude to our early backers". It's a convenience more than anything, but they are very adamant about not creating a pay-2-win environment

Still, will be pretty sweet to amass as many ships as you can cram into an instance, load them with explosives and kamikaze a Bengal or something, and have them all covered by free insurance.

I'd rather find a bunch of friends, board it, kill the crew and steal the ship.

I'm assuming that ship theft will be a legal line of profession.

I know that the game can't possibly have all of the features that I would love to see, because it would be a 50 year development cycle.

But one can dream about boarding a ship and capturing its crew and then showing em out the airlock one by one while they cry for mercy.

Pulling into a port filled with players who don't have ships and press ganging them with a wack to the back of the head and they wake up indentured to your ship. Being dispatched to sectors that have high rates of piracy or rebellion due to the human players there.

Mutiny's on the pirate ship.

Flying the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy and doing the kessel run equivalent.

Having the option of starting the game in the military as a hot shot fighter jock, or a crewman or gunner on a massive battleship or carrier commanded and crewed by human's or npc's when necessary.

Hopefully being able to locate a rival's hanger and being able to bombard it.

Being able to be a above board freighter captain or a totally scummy smuggler or bounty hunter would be awesome too.

I love the idea of governments falling, and an npc invasion as mentioned.
