Sabres @ Flames. 7:30pm MT. SN360, SN1
could be a tough game with the Sabres looking for a bounce back after being embarrassed by the Oilers

US
The Flames were anything but good hosts Sunday night, demolishing the visiting Arizona Coyotes 7-1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Mark Giordano and Sean Monahan staked the Flames out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Matthew Tkachuk and Gaudreau made it four-zip before Jordan Oesterle finally put one by Mike Smith . However, the homeside piled on in the third, with Tkachuk and Giordano scoring again before Sam Bennett rounded things out with his seventh of the season … The Flames improved to 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, including five straight wins. Calgary matched a franchise record for fewest games to record 30 wins in a season (47 GP), a mark set in 1988-89 (30-10-7, 67 points) en route to capturing the Stanley Cup.
THEM
A day after the Flames shelled the Coyotes, the Sabres took it on the chin in Edmonton, getting pummelled 7-2 by the Oilers. Casey Mittelstadt got Buffalo off on the right foot just a minute into the game but then Zach Kassian had a pair and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tallied before Evan Rodrigues pulled his team back within one after 20 minutes. Connor McDavid made it 4-2 before Milan Lucic scored two in a row - one in the second and another 3:50 into the third period - to blow it open. Leon Draisaitl put the final nail in the coffin. Carter Hutton gave up five goals on 12 shots before being yanked for Linus Ullmark … The Sabres have now lost three straight and been outscored 16-9 in the process.

We need a defenseman back quickly. Seeing that D-core without Hamonic is not the most awe inspiring. Maybe we get some depth in the form of a trade too.

Seven Things to Watch for Tonight
- Derek Ryan will play his 200th career game tonight.
- T.J. Brodie is one game from tying Eric Vail and becoming 15th in games played as a Flame.
- Johnny Gaudreau is three assists from tying Hakan Loob and becoming 15th all time in assists as a Flame. Three is a lot, but with the way Gaudreau has been playing it could happen in one night.
- Mark Giordano is one point from tying Hooley Smith and becoming 93rd all time in points as an NHL defenceman. Who is Hooley Smith? He played from 1924 until 1941, amassing 426 points in 717. After Gio passes him only 7 players who played fewer games than Gio have gotten more points.
- Mikael Backlund is one point from tying Willi Plett and becoming 22 in points as a Flame.
- Mark Giordano is one goal from tying Sylvain Cote become 63rd all time in goals as an NHL D-man.
- David Rittich will pass Brian Elliott in games played as a Flame with 50 games after tonight. Rittich is also one win from passing Elliott as well.

Monahan and Gaudreau have started to bump up against some of the big time leaders, so it takes a few games for them to start passing people like they were earlier in the season.

I can’t think of a whole lot of teams that would be able to comfortably absorb three defensemen out of the lineup simultaneously. All things considered those pairings still look reasonable, aside from Prout who is just awful but probably won’t see much play anyway.
I’d simply wait this out as the D will start coming back soon, no need to waste assets upgrading the #9 spot.

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
#Flames head coach Bill Peters said Neal was “under the weather” yesterday. Not “quite right” today and won’t be in.
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Rittich confirmed as tonight’s starter.
Neal (illness) out tonight. Hamonic (family illness) will miss his second straight game. #Flames

I figured that was a typo for sure. Seems low for a 32 year old. I was wrong.

Gio is 93rd in points by a defenseman. Hooley Smith is listed as a forward mostly everywhere except eliteprospects has him listed as a f/d.

Wow, Hooley Smith put up 200 goals in those 717 games. That puts him fourth in goals per game for defensemen behind Orr, Potvin and Coffey. Though it's hard to compare between eras, for example, Coffey had 135 Power-Play goals and Hooley had 8.

It is difficult to go by that guys like Burns and Byfuglien have played both positions as well. Quant hockey has him on their all time list for D-men, and so that is what is easiest for me to go by.

From his hhof biography:
Quote:
Smith's last four NHL seasons were spent with the New York Americans, where his offensive production dropped because he spent part of his time on defense.

No doubt the Sabres will be motivated after hitting rock bottom against the Oilers. But honestly, as long as the Flames show up to play, there's no reason why they shouldn't win this one, even with their depleted D.
