The Calgary Flames announced today that they will retire former Flames captain, Jarome Iginla's number 12 jersey on Saturday, March 2nd in a ceremony prior to their game versus the Minnesota Wild. Iginla announced his official retirement on July 30th, 2018 after playing 20 seasons in the National Hockey League.

"It's humbling, a huge honour, a thrill and to be honest, a little bit surreal," said Iginla. "I am extremely grateful to the Flames ownership and organization for bestowing this tribute on me and my family."

"I'm looking forward to it but I don't know what to expect or how I'll handle my emotions. I'm obviously very excited but I think now that my kids are really into hockey and the NHL that it's going to be so neat to share it with my family. To have them there, and friends, alumni and of course with the fans will really make the day special."

"We are all so proud of Jarome, a gentleman and extraordinary player. On behalf of the Flames ownership and the organization, we congratulate Jarome on an amazing career," said CSEC Vice-Chairman & CEO Ken King.

Ken King once said as long as he was in charge, jersey numbers wouldn't be retired, and instead players would be honoured in the "Forever a Flame" program.

I wonder if #12 gets retired, or Iggy gets honoured?

They announced retirement. Not FAF. I don't think King was so open and shut about it either.

E-mail from the team says retired, and a direct quote from King includes "We are honoured to have his number twelve retired and proudly displayed in the Saddledome rafters to be celebrated with Flames fans for all-time."

On a not totally unrelated note, Ken King is generally an idiot, but he at least got this right. FAF blows, Iggy deserves the full treatment.

Right now, the 300 level is showing as us$110 on Stubhub and c$176 on Ticketmaster.

Lower bowl asks are completely nuts.

Will be nice to finally see #12 raised to the rafters. One of the best darn players in the league when he was in his prime. Hopefully we get to see #2 and #25 raised to the rafters too. This forever a flame stuff is just bush league.

Yeah, you might be the only person to have ever uttered that opinion. I suppose all the Stanley Cups, Canada Cups, Hall of Fame, and Vezina trophy really don't indicate much. Fuhr is pretty widely considered one of the best clutch goaltenders of all time.

P.S. Congrats Iginla - obviously richly deserved - will be a great night for Flames fans at the Dome.
