It's not nonsense. The media votes for the Hart. So, when a member of the media talks about McDavid getting the Hart, you can probably pencil that in as a vote for McDavid.

If Gaudreau continues his pace into the second half (gets top 3 in scoring) and the Oilers miss the playoffs he has a good chance to win.

Sorry, what I meant was: them even discussing him is nonsense. I disagree with them.

Because Taylor Hall dragged his team single handedly into the post season. Exactly who is doing that this year? Nobody. We will see but I would wager a substantial bet if McDavid wins the Art Ross he will get the Hart.

It seems like voters in the media look for:

1. Point totals
2. Difference in points compared to other teammates. Impact on team success
3. Team success, whether or not the team makes the playoffs
4. Goal totals
5. Name recognition and track record
6. Defensive play

McD shouldn't have a chance then

Iggy won both the rocket and art ross....some clown out east didn't have him in the top ten.

Not saying he shouldn't be in the convo but unlikely a Flames player wins any major award

The clown was a Montreal media member (keep in mind who won) and didn't even vote him top 5 (which would have won it for him). He won the Pearson, so there's that.

Zero chance Gaudreau wins the Lindsay. That will be McDavids for the next decade or so. No big deal. He will not win the hart if Oilers miss playoffs, and they will miss because they are no good.

If both the Flames and Gaudreau maintain their pace, he's in the running for hart, but probably 3rd ish right now.

Definitely something to hang in the case, but I care zero for individual awards anyway.

If anyone from a non-playoff team deserves Hart consideration it is Gibson, not Mc27minutesanight.

But seriously, for me it is Kucherov's to lose. Tampa Bay is on pace for a monster season (in this era of parity), and Kucherov is their best player. He's on pace for 137 points. Let that sink in for a while.

JG should get a nomination though.

Default Johnny Gaudreau for the Hart Trophy

yes he skates fast and plays tons of minutes each game, well except for PKs.

Frankly, McDavid isn't in the conversation for the Hart again this year outside of Edmonton.

A non-playoff team player has won the Hart 1/92 times. And that player was Mario who’s team missed the playoffs by one point and the next closest player was behind by 19 points. McDavid doesn’t get the Hart if the Oilers don’t make the playoffs, which looks incredibly likely. Also up until last year the Art Ross or Rocket Richard winner has also won the Hart the last 15 years in a row (obviously not including goalies or defenseman). Right now it’s Kucherov’s to lose unless Johnny overtakes him in scoring or another player drags his team to the playoffs who has no business being there.

I think there's a couple way voters vote. It's the same dimwits who voted in Ovechkin twice into the end year All-Star roster, so even then it might be being generous to say they have some criteria.

Best player:
Easy enough, usually forward bias. Kucherov should be a lock for this vote, but I think McDavid does have a bit of a leg up on Gaudreau here. (Kucherov, McDavid, Gaudreau)

Best player on playoff team: Kucherov again should take this. Crosby's certainly always a threat. Gaudreau though gets second place with Rantanen, Mackinnon splitting votes hurts them and gets more complicated if they miss. (Kucherov, Gaudreau, Crosby)

Most valuable player: This is where it gets complicated. McDavid is probably the most valuable to his team because they are so thin. Kucherov has Point, Stamkos, Hedman. Gaudreau has Giordano, Monahan, Tkachuk and Lindholm. It's arguable if Gaudreau is even the most valuable player for the team. I think I would be more afraid of losing Giordano down the stretch (knock on wood).Chicago's just so far down that Kane can't be all that valuable right now. (McDavid, Gibson, Aho)

Most valuable player on playoff team: Maybe some room to argue for Barzal or Burns as their teams would be outside of the playoffs without them. But I think Ovechkin is actually probably the most valuable player to a playoff team. Double the goals of anyone else on his team (Ovechkin, Kucherov, Gaudreau?)

Favourite team's best player: Hard to argue there isn't some bias by the media. This is where Marner, Tavares and Matthews might get a leg up. (Giordano, Gaudreau, Monahan)

An NHL player the voter has heard for: This is for the people who don't even know what position Ovechkin was playing. These voters will vote based on name recognition so (Crosby, Ovechkin, Lemieux)

You know things are going well when Gaudreau moves into second in the Art Ross race and this thread is bumped in favour of someone else winning the Hart.

As far as I can tell, the last time a player drafted outside the top 100 finished with 120+ points was Luc Robitaille in 1993.

Hopefully Johnny can do it this year.

It's between Kucherov and Johnny Gaudreau

If you talk to Sportsnet they think John Gibson will win the Hart
