Expired Yogurt
I know we had an ongoing “Can You Eat It” thread but I couldn’t find it. I have some yogurt in the fridge dated April 15. I figured it’s trash for sure but thought I’d just check inside. I opened one and it looks no different than any other yogurt cup. It has fruit in it. I mixed it around, smells fine. I tasted a bit of it and it just tastes like yogurt. Did some searching and most blogs seem to say it’s a couple weeks max for yogurt, but none of it mentions what about if everything seems fine. They do mention a host of side effects from eating spoiled yogurt that I don’t feel like having (normal food poisoning stuff). My understanding was that all our dairy was pasteurized so spoiled dairy couldn’t hurt you. And Yogurt is just spoiled milk anyways. There is fruit however.
Thoughts?

Might be fine, might not. Is getting food poisoning worth the $5 to just have bought new yogurt?

No. I don’t like throwing away perfectly fine food.

I wouldn't chance it. Not worth being laid up in bed for a couple days just to save a bit of food.

Just let it sit for another month and then you can enjoy it as cheese.

If it was still sealed and hadn't been sitting open, I would probably go for it. I am assuming the foil seal or whatever was still on it?

Yeah been sealed sitting in a pretty cold fridge. But yeah I'm thinking probably not worth it.

I agree you need to give it a try. If the seal was intact and it seems fine it probably can't kill you. Who knows you have accidentally discovered a wonderful aged yogurt.

This calls for an experiment. We will need someone to eat the yogurt, and a control group who does not. Since you are closest to the yogurt, you should eat it. We will not. You can then document any reactions you have. We will do the same. Results can be posted with charts and stuff after.

I would absolutely eat it, personally. If it doesn't look/smell bad, you're fine.
I've eaten 6 month expired yogurt before.
As long as the package is sealed and stays cool the entire time, yogurt has an amazing capacity for longevity.
I'm too lazy to do the research, but I think I recall it having something to do with the yogurt's pH and probiotics warding off "bad" bacteria.

My co-worker took a food safety course and the limit they mentioned was 10 days for yogurt. If any food was going to be safe beyond its limit, yogurt is probably the best one to take a chance on. Personally, I wouldn't though.

Does it say "Best before April 15" or "Instant death after April 15"?

I think the first thing is that April 15th was probably the 3 or 4 Standard deviation point, unsealed in a relatively warm thread. Sealed in a cold fridge much longer.
Go for it.

Unfortunately I tossed the yogurt last night. Too bad there weren’t more responses then, you guys have me convinced I should have had a cup of it.
I do have a key lime left, but I’d rather eat moldy good yogurt than fresh key lime yogurt.

Yogurt IS bacteria and you're worried about bacteria?
There are a lot of faults in our food industry and expiry dates are one of them. I will drink expired milk indefinitely until it is obvious it's bad (sour, chunky). If it tastes, smells, and looks fine, then it is!
Remember even water has a best before date.
I left chicken out all night and ate it. Only time I've been burned is obviously undercooked chicken.

I eat yoghurt past its expiry date quite often and it has always been fine. Probably not 2 months past though, usually my wife throws things out before then. So long as it looks and smells the way it should I'd eat it.
