The Rookie Development Camp is usually that first week of July - partly so they can show off the Stampede to the rookies they are courting. As they did last year, they have the extra days ice time for vets to come and work, guys to work off injury rust, etc. I believe they had 2 ice surfaces booked last year.

It has only been the 1st week of July since the 2nd year of Treliving's tenure.
Prior to that it has been the 2nd week of July.
I believe at the time the Flames booked the ice times they weren't sure exactly when the camp will start because all the ice times are labeled "Flames rookie camp" Usually when they book for their other veterans it is just booked under the "Calgary Flames"

According to the Flames media website, the Rookie Development Camp will be July 4-8 this year. The fourth is testing, so I guess July 5-8 will be on-ice sessions. Weird dates - usually they try to do the whole camp over one work week without weekends.

So, who will be some of the notable players during this camp? Are Andersson/Kylington/Valimaki/Foo/Mangiapane eligible?

With the announcement today of some young Calgary prospects not qualified as RFA's, my bet is we see a lot more "walk on" players to fill out the ranks - like we did last year. It'll be an interesting camp.

Really interested in seeing how some of our picks from this years draft hold up against some of the more seasoned prospects.

RFAs have usually played too many pro games to qualify for dev camp.

First known invite:
LW Erik Brown of the RIT Tigers
22 year old 6'2 194lbs
Finished 2nd in the NCAA for goals scored with 29 goals in 37 games.
Finished 23rd in the NCAA for points - 42 points in 37 games.
Heading into his senior season, so could be a big UFA signing this spring.
He is also going to the Isles camp.

With a resume like Brown's, the Flames should be putting the full court press on during this camp to sign him now.

He's studying Biomedical Engineering at RIT and with hockey career far from being a guarantee I would say theres no chance he's signing until next spring.

One player I'd like to see given an invite to is Jordan Stallard. Was drafted in 2016 by Winnipeg and wasn't signed to a contract. Had an impressive 91 points this past season. Might be a similar play to Gawdin who played decently and didn't get signed by the Blues.

"I'm more of a defensive defenseman," he added. "I kind of changed my game last year. Now I play against the top lines and I like to play hard against those top guys. I guess you can call me a bit of a disturber on the ice."
Despite his defensive awareness, Pachal took a step forward offensively as well. As an assistant captain with the Raiders, he posted a respectable seven goals and 26 points from the back end. According to Pachal, he learned this year what coaches everywhere tell their players: take care of the defensive zone, and the offense will come naturally.
"The coaching staff really helped me find my way this year," he said. "I was kind of lost, I didn't know what kind of player I was but playing against those top lines really helped me find my way and know what kind of player I want to be at the next level. Just playing against those guys hard every night, not making anything easy on them and trying to shut them down, really helped a lot."
"Playing against the top lines it is tough to get those points so I'm not too worried about it, but being one year older and the game slowing down a bit helped with the points."
After attending Ottawa's camp last year and just trying to soak it in, Pachal has some specific goals in mind for his early audition with the Flames organization.
"Last year it was just the experience for me. It was eye-opening at first but once I settled in I did well," he said. "Going into Calgary this year, my second camp, it's different. My mindset is trying to push for a rookie camp spot. I'll just try to perform the best I can and hopefully get a chance to play in the rookie tournament."
