Fields isnt bad, but he has warts. Big ones.
Chicago with a first time OC just was not a good situation. Say what you will about Waldron, but Chicago has set up Williams with a great situation to succeed. Mich better than Fields was given

At the least a creative OC should be able to devise a package of plays for Fields like Taysom Hill. Once he crosses the line of scrimmage he's one of the most dangerous players in the league.

really great move by the Steelers.
Fields is inconsistent to be sure, but his upside is so much higher than Pickett... and for only a fourth round pick? Worth the risk... i mean they got a 3rd for Pickett, which is a tidy bit of work for Khan
and if Fields doesn't work out, Wilson is a serviceable QB stop gap too.

Yup.
As a QB....he is a remarkable RB.
But any other metric....he is abysmal behind center.
40 games played, 10-28 as a starter, a meager 166 yds passing per game, 40 TD's versus 30 INT's and 38 fumbles (25 of them lost), sacked 135 times.
Those are objectively insanely bad numbers.
Rushing though?
2220 yds on 356 carries, 14 Td's and 130 1st downs.
Really good numbers.
What happened with him is he is/was still trying to get away with stuff that was possible in college but what gets you obliterated at the NFL level.
Him sitting and learning while watching a vet perform his craft is his only chance to become successful to some degree in the NFL.

He’s actually not very good as evidenced by that paltry return. Lots of teams took a hard look at him and deemed he wasn’t worth much in trade compensation. All the stats point to him being replacement level. He’s a bad QB with an intriguing skill set. It’s possible the Steelers can coach him up and their defense usually makes things easy on their QB’s who aren’t asked to carry the team. Maybe he can succeed in that type of role. I like the low risk/reward scenario for the Steelers as if he doesn’t work out then no harm done.

Totally, which is why the news today of the Steelers looking to sign Russ long-term doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and may also get the team's relationship with Fields off to a bad start. I assumed he'd just be a 1-2 year stop-gap / mentor while Fields finds his way. Odd

I don't give much stock into that ... I mean, the guy literally signed a contract last week, any talk of another one should be shelved for many months lol.
I would expect Wilson to start the season with Fields in a gadget role, and then we'll see how Russ does. Wouldn't be shocked if Fields took over at some point, but all of that is wide open and will depend on how they play. Either way, I feel they've upgraded the position both short and long term. Russ may be washed, but I think he's still an upgrade over Pickett. Fields has his warts, but he surely has a lot more upside than Pickett. He's a year younger too, which is weird considering he entered the NFL a year ahead of him. Even if the experiment goes up in flames, it was still a nifty piece of GMing by Khan as it didn't cost them anything substantial. Low risk, potentially high reward if Fields can turn into a solid starter.

Yeah the bottom line for the Steelers is that both Wilson and Fields are upgrades on Pickett who stinks and has no upside.

Nah Fields is happy to be out of his situation.
Wilson is the one the Steelers have to placate with this talk of an extension (they could've signed him for 2 years last week if that was an issue) and handle with kid gloves in this situation, where they are bringing in another starter into the QB room.

Fields is frustrating because he can make every throw, is athletic, has a great deep ball and is loved in the locker room.
However he decision making is so slow that he misses reads and has little to no anticipation in his passes. Media guys correctly noted that Fields is looking for a guy to be 'College open" rather than NFL open.
Ill be watching and cheering for him though.

Really? Yeah, I agree with you that that would be a bit premature.
Not sure why you would sign Russ to a long term contract without seeing him play in the new system...Also, what if Fields is much better? Locking into an aging Russ seems very 'un-Steeler' like.
Fields needs to be more open to running if he has room to do so, as it forces the D to play him a little more conservatively... Processing speed is another thing entirely. Having OSU never ending 1st round WR machine to throw to made him look better than he is... he's still got some tools, but NFL windows are tight and being a half beat to late can end up as a PBU or worse...

Jesus this contract is ####ing abysmal. Browns really went from in great shape after that playoff win right back to classic Browns.

$41 million guaranteed makes total sense for a WR with a penchant for dropping passes that was so highly regarded around the league that he was traded for a 5th and 6th round pick.

Also went from "Plucky loveable underdog" to "Kind of despicable" in that time due to "upgrading" from Baker Mayfield to Deshaun Watson.
But once again it seems to have been proven that Baker Mayfield was not the problem.

Rodgers needs to start getting himself a running mate for 2028.
