Gorillas have been found, for the first time, to be a source of HIV.Previous research had shown the HIV-1 strain, the main source of human infections, with 33m cases worldwide, originated from a virus in chimpanzees.
But researchers have now discovered an HIV infection in a Cameroonian woman which is clearly linked to a gorilla strain, Nature Medicine reports.
Quote:
French doctors treating the 62-year-old Cameroonian woman who was living in Paris said they initially spotted some discrepancies in routine viral load tests.
Further analysis of the HIV strain she was infected with showed it was more closely related to SIV from gorillas than HIV from humans.
She is the only person known to be infected with the new strain but the researchers expect to find other cases.
Before moving to Paris, she had lived in a semi-urban area of Cameroon and had no contact with gorillas or bush meat, suggesting she caught the virus from someone else who was carrying the gorilla strain.

Bad week for primates.

Chimpanzees thought to be original source of malaria.

Something out of a nasty Sci Fi movie.

Tongue-Eating Parasites Attack Fish Near Normandy

Weaver fish off the Jersey coast have fallen prey to a horrific parasite: an isopod that devours the fish's tongue and then replaces it with itself. Fortunately, it doesn't eat human tongues, though it will bite. [Image via Warren Ellis]

That fish parasite has to be the nastiest thing I think I have ever seen - look at the way it's just hunched there like it's about to leap onto your face and push its way into your mouth to EAT YOUR DELICIOUS FRICKIN' TONGUE! MMMMPTTTHHH ARGGGGGH!

I, for one, don't want anything to do with tongue eating overlords.

Nasty.

I was watching a special on National Geographic by a doctor who's an adventure junky. He actually willingly swallowed a tap worm cyst so that he could get infected by it, and he sat in a leech pond as well.

The other special that was on last night rated the 10 most dangerous animals in Australia.

the winner was the funnel web spider

Honestly, that looks like someone painted over an old loafer and jammed a mouse inside of it.

Someone's running out of research dollars.

How do you know if we're quoting it or if we're finding the picture and posting it?
