I think it was certainly a mistake to build it up with its' own promo / marketing / warning.... It's probably the most underwhelmed the boys has ever left me, just considering the drop off after earlier climbing inside a giant P-hole and going boom, that one truly brought me right back to the shock and awe of S1E1. And I think the marketing had as much to do with the let down as the content.
I know no one is that interested in comic talk, but Herogasm was kind of a wet fart compared to the comics version, which was a 6 issue run and involved every major Vought hero.
I think the show has gone so off-course from the comics that there aren't any real spoilers left, so here are some highlights from the comic version of Herogasm:
Spoiler!
-The heroes told the world they're actually deep in outer space, fighting an alien threat.
-Herogasm is actually run by Vought, they rent out a private island and packed it with drugs, booze and hookers.
-Black Noir catches Huey spying on the heroes, he shoves his thumb up Hueys butt so hard Huey passes out in a sewer. BN giggles about it and runs away, the incident never comes up again.
-Soldier Boy and Homelander are banging all weekend long. HL is teasing SB with getting into the 7, but HL just wants to screw with SB because he's the second most popular hero. SB is a bitch in the comics.
-"Vision" and "The Wasp" cheat on each other every chance they get and are constantly fighting about it.
-Stormfront is a dude and he spends the whole weekend with his giant dong hanging out.
-"Mr fantastic" simultaneously investigating a crime and participating in an orgy.
-The vice president, a mash-up of GWB and Clinton, his tag-line is "Ah wahnt muh dickey suck"
It's a good time, fans of the show can check out the original Herogasm comics without really spoiling anything.

That is why I gave up on the comics after 12 issues. It is so over-the-top. Shock for the sake of shock without story to back it up.

I guess it just depends on what you want to get out of it. Some who hasn't watched The Boys asked me to describe it and I said it is like True Blood, but instead of vampires and werewolves, it's people with super powers. The story is kind of secondary to the moments and none of it should be taken seriously. Sometimes you want the top shelf whiskey, but sometimes a girly drink with a little umbrella hits the spot. I put The Boys in the latter category.

It's over the top, no doubt, but it has a point. The Boys is ultimately about corporate greed and corruption. The extreme gore is meant to illustrate the extreme callousness that must exist in people who enjoy great power and the devastating consequences of their actions.
I find the Boys to be pretty smart. It's definitely not just shock value and gore. The characters are all very well done. The politics and corporate culture is obviously satirical but also pretty on point.
Overall, I'd say the shows greatest strength is its use of satire. All very on point and very clever, without being self-righteous.
The show has a much better balance between the commentary on corporations/heroes and the shock moments. The comic book did not have any balance. If you read Matata's spoilered section you can see a lot of it. Most of which couldn't be aired on TV.
