Friedman said in 31 thoughts they kicked the tires on tanev this year, i think the leafs have clearly seen they need a right sided puck moving defensive d man
I bet they move for him at the draft
Cheaper than hamilton, arguably fills more of a need, they have reilly, gardiner, dermott as more offensively talented guys
Badly need a shutdown one

Hamilton doesn't fill a burning need for the Leafs. But if someone offers you a young 6'5" top pairing, RH defenceman under a reasonable contract for a winger you say yes. Then you move an offensive defenceman that you don't need any more for a shutdown guy.
That all said, I wonder what the Leafs would give up for Gio.

Tanev is good but he's also made of glass. Any team with Cup aspirations can't rely on him to be healthy for a serious run.

How close is Andrew Nielsen to making the leafs ? He has been pretty impressive since they drafted him. I remember at the draft they had said he was a defensive dmen that would struggle to put up points. Then the next year was a leading scorer for d in the WHL. He translated that to the AHL as well.

Pointless to acquire him when we have Hamonic.

How much value can you place on a guy that has played 70 games once in his career and has averaged less than 50 games played over the last two seasons? His injury history is about as bad as you will ever see.

To be fair, if I worked for the Canucks I'd probably call in sick a lot too.

Nobody is trading for Tanev and if they do the return is going to be extremely disappointing to Canuck fans. How much is an oft injured one dimensional D man worth? I think he fetches a 2nd at best.

Would anyone here consider trading Dougie for Marner or Nylander and then signing UFA John Carlson to a long term deal?
I think I would do that in a heartbeat. We have the cap space to take on both players and I think Carlson would be an upgrade over Dougie and any one of Marner or Nylander would instantly be our best right shooting forward AINEC.

Depends on Carlson's next contract, but if it's at all reasonable then yes I think that's a no brainer.
Carlson+Marner>>>Dougie and I love Dougie

I would certainly do Hamilton for Marner but not Nylander unless the Leafs add. As for Carlson I am not a fan as I think he has a pretty poor defensive game and is not an upgrade on Dougie imo.

What does a realistic contract for Tavares look like?
10M for 8 years?
12M for 6 years?

Agree
Feel like the values would be:
Hamilton = Marner
Hamilton = Nylander +
Brodie = Nylander
Personally my guess is Leafs try to take advantage of the extra year on Marners ELC, and Nylander is the one they would be willing to move.

I think 7 years, because I don't think he re-signs with the Isles.
Stamkos did it last year with Tampa, but they were a legit contender.
So, 7 years and between $70-80 million total.
$10 million cap hit to $11.4 million cap hit.
Just IMO.

That seems about right by my estimation. Does this cost out price the Flames? If they had the opportunity to sign Tavares at this cost would it be worth it?

Scoring Winger

1) Hamilton is NOT getting moved.
2) Nylander isn't that good.

I think it depends on what Tavares wants. If it's most actual money, Florida at 10M+ for 7 years might make sense, due to taxes that's a lot more than your average team offering 12M.
If he wants to win, maybe he takes a look at a paycut for a team like Nashville who could use him. Or stack Chicago's forwards, thanks to Hossa's LTIR, in which case maybe he does sign at 9M or under.
Maybe he's happy in New York, and happy to take the 8th year.
But I think 11.5M/7 years is a reasonable contract expectation for him. To a team that is willing to offer him a decent chunk of cash but also has a solid team (after acquiring him). A nice middle-ground.

A seven year contract would bring him to 35. Would it be worth an 11M cap hit for 5 years after 30?

He'd be 34 years when his contract expires if he signed 7 years. And, for me, the short answer to your question is - yes.

So much can change in 7 years. I seriously wouldn't worry about it.
Even if he's rendered ineffective somehow there is always ways to get out of it, as we've seen year after year in this league.
The first few years IMO he'd be elite, the last couple he'd still be above average. Not worth $11 million, but still effective.
