Hate to nitpick but any idea what's going on with the ATL? I saw it briefly then it disappeared. It would be awesome to read before I have to be sober again.
I too do not see it... certainly not post 21 for me. I noticed around post 40 someone quoted the ATL so I can see the headlines but not the content...

I think the present Flames are pretty confident in their ability to come back but if that is a true killer instinct, I am not sure.
I think to have true killer instinct, the present team needs more toughness and the lack of it is what worries me a bit. They are showing more and are starting to come to each others aid but think they need more.
I would hate to upset their chemistry now though. That is very important as well.
I don't mean toughness by having players who can fight. I mean toughness by having players who can take care of business by themselves and play a regular shift. Not players who mainly fight and play 4 to 5 minutes.
If you take a look at the 89 Flames, they had Otto, Peplinski, Hunter, MacDonald, and Patterson up front...and Gilmour could agitate as good as any of them as well as contribute offensively. Then we had MacCrimmon, Ramage, even Macoun rounding up the back end.
They were tough, not dirty, and they had that killer instinct.
The only Flames I would really consider tough are Chucky, Girodano, and Hamonic. I am worried that the present Flames might be pushed around a bit.
As far as comparing defense of the 89 Flames and our present team, I think our present team can hold their own. They are certainly more mobile...maybe not as tough but certainly as mobile or better.
I think Giordano is as good as MacInnis although in 89, MacInnis literally had Roy shaking whenever he had the puck. That intimidation was a big factor against the Habs. I think Hanifin will become as good as Suter.
So in summary, the two things that worry me a bit with our present Flames are team toughness and goal tending. The goal tending seems to be sorting itself out somewhat but it is certainly not ideal.
Agreed. The 89 team came at you relentlessly even if they had a large lead. This team is still learning that. Given the constraints of the cap I'm not sure having a productive fourth line like what 89 had is possible, but since that affects all teams I'm hopeful.
Key to deep playoff runs these days is to have a productive third line and enough depth to have less pylons out there than your opponent.

As long as the Flames are winning I'm not sure anything needs to give. They are scoring at a high rate. You can afford to give him time to find his game, or chemistry with team-mates.
Totally agree and to add; He probably is huge factor in why, and how this team came together at the beginning of the season because he already went through it with Vegas. Some of these experienced guys can have impacts that run much deeper than what we only see on the ice, I wouldn't be surprised if he factored in some of the changes that happened after the loss the Pens where Peters said they made some changes in the way the team plays. Sure all speculation my part, but so is the assumptions some people make about actual player contributions and where they are having an impact.
I had to watch that Gaudreau goal a few times. I can't believe how quick his hands are and how precise his shot is up close with so little time.
The play between him and Giordano on Gio's goal also showed great chemistry. It wasn't flashy, but that little pass back and forth opened the lane for Gio just enough. It helps that as soon as Gaudreau has the puck, everyone automatically focuses on him.
Congrats to Tkachuk for a great game and scoring a goal in front of his home town friends and family.

The Following User Says Thank You to VilleN For This Useful Post:
Wow! What a difference 1 month and a half make. In October, we went 3 - 6 - 1 (after the infamous 9 to 1 humiliation vs Pitt at home), lost in the shootout next game vs Washington. We ended October winning 2 straight vs Toronto and Buffalo. So, after the Wash. game, we were 3 - 6 - 2. Remember this?...
What are you talking about?
3 Oct: Cgy 2 @ Van 5 L
5 Oct: Cgy 7 v Van 4 W
9 Oct Cgy 3 @ Nsh 0 W
11 Oct: Cgy 3 @ StL 5 L
13 Oct Cgy 3 @ Col 2 OTW
17 Oct Cgy 5 v Bos 2 W
19 Oct Cgy 3 v Nsh 5 L
21 Oct Cgy 4 @ NYR 1 W
23 Oct Cgy 2 @ Mtl 3 L
25 Oct Cgy 9 v Pit 9 L
27 Oct Cgy 3 v Wsh 4 OTL
29 Oct Cgy 3 @ Tor 1 W
30 Oct Cgy 2 @ Buf 1 OTW
That is a 7-5-1 record. The worst the Flames were in October was .500. After the Washington OTL they were sitting at 5-5-1 and never looked back.
