Quinn was traded for "old" Mike Bullard, of course. I remember when Quinn was traded to the Pens he said "well I won;t mind not losing to the Oilers all the time". And then Calgary beat the Oilers in the POs.
Looking at 86 it's a little surprising how many guys were no longer there when they won in 89 (some of them key guys). Tonelli, Reinhart, Bullard, Wilson, Bozek, Sheehy, Risebrough, Berezan, Bradley, etc. 5 out of the top 10 points guys were moved by the time they won the cup.
Maybe there's a lesson in that.

I would certainly beg to differ with that opinion.
As for the team "scoring at will", this club is on pace for 294 goals...and 224 against.
That 88-89 club scored 354...and gave up 226.
|
I think the point was that you don't need to be a 117-point team since there's no 115-point team.

I believe Quine himself said he felt injuries derailed his season and he lost his spot to the call up. I have liked what i have seen from him so far regardless of the goals. Another guy that seems to do the little things right. Hope he can stick around a little longer.

His stats suggest he has always been a really good (but not top line) AHLer, and he had a decent rookie season.
But this year he found something in the AHL and he obviously has scoring touch in the NHL. None of his goals have been lucky - all have involved skill. Last game he had good hand-eye to bat the puck into the net on his first and, while the goalie was down on his second, he didn't have a great angle.
He seems to have good speed, he's not small, he can centre, and he's not a bad defensive player either. I'd re-sign him if the price is right.

I'm just interpreting Flash's post. I think you're right about Tampa, they're likely on a close to 115-point pace. The others? Not quite as high.
But I'll let Flash do a better job of explaining his point.

Yeah but even then it is this for points pace now...
Tampa 125
Winnipeg 114
Nashville 112
Flames 111
Caps 110
Leafs 109
Sabres 108
There are a lot of good teams this year.

...And no sharks, ducks, kings, blackhawks, oilers(obviously) or Pittsburgh in that top 7.
I'll take it.

Nah, come on, of course there are better teams.
There just aren't dynastic juggernauts roaming the league able to put up 100+ goal differentials. The league is different than it was 30 years ago.
In relation to the here and now, the flames are largely scoring at will. They have averaged over 3.5 goals per game 15 times in franchise history, and this is the only time since 94.
Second in the league in goals for.
This is as close to a flames 80s team as we've seen since....the 80s.

This is exactly my point. The flames are in the thick of it, not duking it out with another team to see who can be 25 points up on the third place team.

The 1988 team scored 397 goals in 80 games - though it wasn't as good defensively as the 1989 team.

I'm still angry Crisp didn't win the Jack Adams that year. Team won the Stanley Cup (over the winner Burns) and won President's trophy (ahead of the Canadiens).

One guaranteed difference between now and 89. Flames won't play a team with 43 points less than them in the first round.
I try not to think too much about how close the Flames came to ending that season in total disaster.
