Why the Winning Streak is Good but is it the Best?
Even if we 'match' or 'surpass' the 1978 Atlanta Flames 10 game winning streak on Monday, it may not be the landmark people are making out.
Back when Atlanta did it, there were no OT or SO wins. After 60 minutes if you were level, the game was a tie and the winning streak was over. This was also the case for the 88-89 Calgary Flames.
If we still had the same points system, the current streak would be 3 games. But that said, because the point system is the way it is, team will naturally approach games differently. For instance I've heard it said if all games were made 3 pointers, we may see more games settled in 60 minutes as there would be a greater incentive if teams got 3 for a regulation win and 2 for an OT or SO win.
So, aside from the fantastic surprise of this run and how it has contributed towards the likelihood of a playoff campaign, how do others measure this streak against past franchise marks?

I guess we'll just have to win 20 in a row then to make sure to pound the record home.

Why does it matter how the wins came? The 10 game Atlanta win streak was 40 years ago. The game changes. This new streak is a great achievement and should be lauded as such. Just because a win comes in extra time shouldn't diminish the fact that it's a win.

There was still a 5 min OT, just no shootouts and more players in OT

That is true in 1988-89, but not in the Atlanta days. Back then, there was no overtime. Games were over after 60 minutes.

It's a valid point but seems somewhat ill timed since the streak is ongoing.
Let's enjoy the moment before arguing eras?

The game was different in so many ways, the format is just one of them. The goalies also wore actual cinder blocks for pads and averaged about 5'7" 180lbs.

Nobody really cares about the steak itself, more about the standings as a result of the streak and the timing of it.

In 1989 there was no OT either. Game over after 60 minutes. No doubt a streak of wins in regulation is more difficult but that does nothing to take away the achievement of this years club. Since the rules have changed, its hard to compare them.
I had totally forgotten the Atlanta Flames went on such a hot streak. They were considered the most successful expansion team of their era since they were instantly competitive IIRC.

Yes there was. Overtime was added in 1983. There was no loser point but that's not relevant to a win streak.

I'm not going to get sidetracked on the debate about why comparing players, teams and records across eras is an exercise in futility, but modern day? Winning 9 in a row is pretty sweet.

Wayne scored most of his points in the 80s when it was way easier to score...take the records back.

Back then there wasn't the same level of parity throughout the league either, compared to now. So OT/SO or not maybe this streak is actually more impressive on some levels.

^^ pretty much going to say the same thing. Frequent expansion meant that almost anyone that could hold a hockey stick had a chance at the NHL. A bit of an exaggeration, but the talent pool was pretty shallow.
