Sorry for your loss Captaincanada80. Joey was a very bright light for the hockey community and clearly meant alot to everyone who ever knew him. Rest in peace Mr. Moss.

I grew up in Edmonton so Joey and his story are very well known to me.
He was the only person I "knew" with Down Syndrome.

As you can imagine, the initial diagnosis and shock was monumental. As a parent, you kind of envision life for your child going a certain way but when that path changes, it is helpful to find inspiration.

Joey provided that for me.

His story provided me hope and made me believe in the life my daughter could have despite the obstacles and challenges which may come.

Joey changed the way people looked at Down Syndrome and paved the way for people like my daughter.

He will forever provide our family with inspiration on how full of a life someone with a disability can have and the positive effect they can have on others.

I cannot wait to tell her all about him when she is old enough.

Spoiler!
Above everything else Joey achieved and accomplished, this is an example of the type of story that make me most proud.

May you and your family have a lifetime of health and happiness and share those special moments as we did with Joey

In Lieu of flowers please give generously to the Winnfred Stewart Association so others with disabilities have equal opportunity in life

He was a great ambassador to the sport. The guy just bled Oilers hockey, and I have nothing but respect for him. RIP.

Regardless if he's an Oilers for life in the Battle of Alberta, he's truly one of the good guys. Rest in peace Joey.

What sad news, I don't know what to say. My favourite Oiler. Rest in peace Joey. Thanks for your contributions to your community and the hockey world.

Terribly sad news. My sympathies to all his family, friends and the enormous breadth of people whom he touched in life.

RIP Joey. You paved the way for individuals with disabilities and proved outright the amazing things that can be accomplished.

I had no idea he was ill or even 57. Doesn't look a day over 40. Sad to see someone leave this world so young.

And while Wayne might be the "enemy" in our magical sports world, what a class act he is. To give Joey a chance to succeed at what he did...not many others in his position would do the same. Condolences for the loss of your friend Mr. Gretzky.

The way society has treated people with Down Syndrome has changed immensely in the last ~30 years which has exponentially increased their standard of living and life span.

As recently as the early 80's average life span was about 25-30 years. These days, its close to 60.

This is all due to early intervention from both a medical and social standpoint. I continue to be amazed at all the supports which have been offered to our family.

Joey actually outlived his younger typical brother, who was his main caretaker and guardian. I believe he passed in 2018 or 2019 which was probably very tough on him.

I believe he was with the Esks for a very long time. Did equipment for both teams.
The tributes here are just pouring out. As they should be....

I hope he not only gets a banner, but a statue next to Wayne's.

Let him continue to be an inspiration to everyone who sees it, especially those with disabilities. Not everyone gets the privilege to watch NHL hockey live. When people see them side by side, they can say there stand two of the best Oilers ever.

You know what....as much as I rag on the Oilers for raising a banner for everything including McDavid overcoming the sniffles...I'd be on board with that.

I think Joey deserves it.

A bronze statue of Joey belting out Oh Canada outside Rogers would be the greatest thing ever.

It is easy to get cynical and skeptical about the forum genuineness, especially in the off-topic section, where politics spiked by trolls can bring the worse out of some posters. But reading this thread reminds me that a vast majority of the forum users are real people and their reactions to someone else's sorrow and loss are compassionate, good and kind. My sincere condolences to Joey's family.

There was a very nice tribute to Joey by Wayne Gretzky this morning with old video footage and comments (I've seen it on CTV News, but it was likely aired by other stations as well).
