It'd be a good argument if hockey games lasted 12 hours

Not really sure where you got “high and mighty” from?

The NHL is a game-day activity. If you don't have game-day revenue, you don't survive," said Foley, calling the TV revenue the teams received during the 2020 postseason "pretty [minimal], honestly, and not very good."
If the season started today he could have 1,800 fans in Vegas.

It seems it would be financially better for the owners to skip a season rather than play with less than 40% capacity.

This is from the Vegas owner that made 33M in 2019 #13 in operating income in the league

The Quebec jr league has started with no fans in Quebec arenas but between 925 to over 2200 fans in Maritime arenas.

Any idea when and how the WHL will open?

^ Old Bill Foley has been through all of the ups and downs in the NHL...

That said, I don't disagree with the notion that the season is on thin ice.

Depends on season length...

Assuming divisional only play, 42 games is actually the sweet spot for a balanced/even schedule:

8 team div: 6 games against each 7 teams
7 team div: 7 games against each 6 teams

Being almost exactly half the length of a regular season might be nice, from a statistical standpoint, too.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up even shorter, with an expanded ~24 team play-in.

Spoiler!

Schedule 'integrity' is very important IMO in any shortened season.

I find it ironic that implementing a salary cap that caused lock outs and missed seasons and games were designed to control costs for small Market teams to keep their franchises.

Now the cap is being pushed by these small market teams that it was designed to protect.

The Flames and Oilers and Jets are all at or over the CAP ( that made it possible for them to exist) in these 2-3 years of reduced revenue.

I would have thought that these small market teams would be more like Ottawa and control costs (and re-build) through the low revenue years.

At some point the Rangers Leafs Kings and Bruins and teams that generate a larger portion of revenue to be shared will point to this and say that is pretty obvious that these supposedly marginal teams can handle a larger cap and we would like the ability to spend our way to winning.

That’s the beauty of choice. You don’t have to watch and are free to do whatever you want.

The most absurd thing about this alignment format is that Sportsnet is still gonna cheerlead for us to root for the remaining Canadian teams in the playoffs.

I guarantee after a year in the same division, I'm gonna hate all these teams LOL

Saw Mike Johnson and Craig Button ranked the Canadian teams

Both had the Oilers near the bottom at 5-6
Both had the Flames at 2
Johnson had the Leafs at 1 and Button had the Habs.

I think the Habs are going to be a lot more disappointing than people expect.

Their young forwards, although solid, seem like they might slump.
They don't really have defense, and Price is not what he used to be.
Really, their roster is still quite bad. Much worse than the Jets' roster at least.

Weber and Petry are fantastic, Edmondson, Chariot, Romanov are not bad.

I'd take their D over Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg.

Surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this. And with the talk about Montreal, I thought I would bring it back up.

As you said, Button had the Habs ranked 1st. That really surprised me. I don't see it, personally, but it will be interesting to watch them.

As for the rankings, I was trying to remember them but the memory isn't what it used to be. This is the best I can recall, and maybe people can correct me...

Johnson:

1) Toronto
2) Calgary
3) Vancouver
4) Montreal
5) Edmonton
6) Winnipeg
7) Ottawa

Button:

1) Montreal
2) Calgary
3) Winnipeg
4)Toronto
5) Vancouver
6) Edmonton
7) Ottawa

My rankings:

1) Toronto / Calgary

3) Montreal
4) Vancouver / Edmonton / Winnipeg

7) Ottawa

Edmonton stayed relatively static this off season while Ottawa added some decent talent. Could see that gap bridge.

IMO there isn't much between everyone except OTT, but my order is:

Winnipeg
Montreal
Calgary
Toronto
Vancouver
Edmonton
Ottawa

I don't think any of the teams are very close to contending for a cup, but Vancouver has the best framework if Demko puts it all together.

Ottawa being ranked hilariously low. They are going to surprise some people and push.

Edmonton and Vancouver hang out in the basement together this year.

Personally, I've got the Jets at the bottom.

And Toronto at the top. Edmon and Calgary fighting for 2 and 3. The rest, meh. Its all gravy for Ottawa at this point.

Habs - I don't think they're great, but having Price can bail them out of a lot of trouble
Calgary - I still think that Tre did a good job in the off season and we can worry less about goaltending. Its a fairly deep team, but I'm still a bit disturbed by the top line
Toronto - That blueline even with Brody is awful, and their forwards don't backcheck well.

Winnipeg - Still kinda deep, when CH is on he's a great goalie
Vancouver - Got ravaged, its Demko's team
Edmonton - Bad goalies, really bad blueline without Klefbom. Defensively poor forwards made up mainly of castoffs. Yeah Draisaitl and McDavid can score but can't defend and the Oilers are forced to pack all of their top talent on one line because Drai is ordinary without McDavid. The only thing that saves this team from DFL is Ottawa is horrible
Ottawa - Enough said.
