I'm not sure of that. Rittich already has a few years of experience playing in a pro league that's a little below the AHL, and did well in the process. I think he's proven he's too good for the ECHL, and he'll have to play his way off the Stockton roster to start the year. Depending on how prospect camp goes, McDonald will probably end up in the ECHL so that he can be a starter, and Rittich can back up Gillies in Stockton.

And what are the odds that he beats Gillies for the starter role in the AHL. Gillies is one the best goalie prospects in hockey. And if Gillies fails, you would think management would want to test McDonald at the AHL level.

Let's face it. Rittich has a huge mountain to climb, and it's not like he's just starting his career, he's 24 years old.
