Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
Told #CBJ are closing in a one-year, one-way deal with free agent center Sam Gagner. Filing blog shortly to Puck-rakers.

Will be interesting to see the $'s with his contract. It will probably show what kind of money Hudler, Russell, Vrbata, etc will be worth.

Quite the fall for Hudler if Gagner is comparable. Gagner cleared waivers and played a chunk in the AHL last season. 16 NHL points. Hudler put up 46 at least.
Gagner shouldn't be getting more than a million.

Told Sam Gagner's deal with #CBJ - likely to be made official today - is one-year, $650,000.

It is a decent deal for both sides. Gagner gets a show me contract with guaranteed pay, due to a 1 way. Blue jackets shore up their depth

For that contract, all Gagner has to do to make it valuable is have one 8-point game....and never score another point all year.

While I am under no illusion that there was a Sam gagner sweepstakes, wonder if this will spur additional signings as there were multiple teams interested in gagner per tsn1040 Vancouver
“All I’m looking for is an opportunity,” said Gagner, who had offers from at least 4 other clubs, including Vancouver

See, this contract in my opinion is fantastic for both sides.
Gagner needs a rebound year so he goes to a team with little depth so hes going to get his chance.
But seriously check out Gagner's stats for the past few years, if you try and look past last year in Philadelphia he plays ~70 games and gets between 30-40 points.
Hes actually only dipped below 40 points twice in his career.
If you can grab a ~40 point centre for $650K you do it every day.
On the flip side he must have learned his defensive game from Taylor Hall because his +/- stats are reprehensible.

Another player ruined with the stench of Edmonton still lingering. Once a loser always a loser.

You guys remember the "kid line" - Gagner, Cogliano, and Nilsson? The anointed future of the oilers? The insufferable mountain of hype from fans and media (in hindsight, only the tip of the iceberg when you consider all the first overalls in the pipeline)
None of them ever surpassed their rookie totals, much less lived up to expectations. I remember MacT saying "cogs" would be a 30+ goal scorer lol. After a 20 game hot streak. Never change.

No - he obviously didn't learn the patented Taylor Hall "loaf on the backcheck, but leave the ice before the puck goes in" move.
