Cup Etiquette
Someone lost their mind that bc chris posted a photo of him...get ready for it **gasp**... not just touching, but drinking out of the stanley cup.
So where are we at with this? Am I going to hell because I didn't even capitalize it?
Personally, short of doing something really disrespectful, like flipping it over on stage at a rock concert or defacating/urinating on it, anything goes. Players/non-players, who cares, it is a personal preference if you touch it, hold it, drink from it or lift it over your head like you just won the stanley cup playing street hockey. Silly rules and superstitions are ok for NHLers. For the rest of us, if you get to drink/hold/lift the Cup, you do it.

Was at the Hockey Hall of Fame last week and my wife and mother-in-law were laughing at me because i wouldnt even make eye contact with the cup in tge great hall until i looked at all the other awards and the induction ledger. I even went into the vault and looked at the original cup and took some pics, then i went up to the podium where you get the professional picture done and was reluctant to touch it. The guy said i could touch it, ao i gave it a hug and then placed my hand over the flames ingraved section.
For me, its all about the superstition. For others, maybe not so much.
But if hockey gods care, then may all canucks fans lift the cup above their head.

Because touching a trophy doesn't change your odds of winning another trophy.

I get the voodoo and the hexes and such, but I'm not a hockey player or on the team or affiliated with any team in any way.
Also I'm a grown adult and my likelihood of making the NHL at this stage in my life seem rather slim and even if that intermediate miracle were to occur then my odds of winning a cup at that stage are as close to nil as makes no difference.
So at the risk me personally never winning the Stanley Cup, hell yeah I'd take a drink out of it if I was offered it. What do I have to lose?

That's a little different though but is equally silly.
I'm more referring to the perceived disrespect of touching it at all.
Lots of people thing that only an NHLer who has won the cup has the right to touch or lift the Stanley Cup.
An NHLer not wanting to touch or lift it until they win because of superstition, or even out of respect, is totally ok with me. As long as they don't extend their superstition to anyone else.

My son will not touch the cup, he has seen it 3 times.
I have seen the cup and touched it 3 times.
He is 10.

What I say or do has no bearing on the outcome of professional sports.
I'll touch the cup, drink from it, drunkingly predict shutouts in the 2nd period, etc etc, and anyone that gets upset over any of it frankly I feel bad for.
As a player, I find the superstitions to be interesting. But for fans to feel they apply to them, I've always chuckled about it.

Ha ha ha. Awesome.
I'm not normally a superstitious person, and think this charade you went through at the Hall is ludicrous, but I would absolutely do the same thing.
Crazy superstitions and rituals are part of what makes being a fan fun. We know it doesn't actually make a difference of course. Nothing is going to change if you waited to look at the Cup last, we know that, but it's still cool that you did it.
My day-to-day superstition is PVRing games, thinking that if I'm not watching live, they won't play as well. How stupid, of course, but I like thinking it.

Just be respectful of the Cup as a fan when you are near it. Touching is fine.
As a player in the NHL though, you should never touch it unless you win it. You didn't earn the right to touch it yet.

I am a huge hockey and flames fan but I have never seen the awe or draw to touch the trophies. I have not seen it in person and I don't think I would go out of my way to see it but if it was somewhere I already was I wouldn't see an issue with touching it. I saw the grey cup once and it was like what a kid may draw the Stanley Cup to look like.

To me, anything goes that doesn't harm/spoil anyone else's future 'pleasure' (the moment when they'd hold the cup). That'd mean no peeing/vandalizing etc. If you want to disrespect it though, that seems to me is up to you.
I never get people who imagine a ruleset because a certain trophy means a lot to them.

I have photos of me lifting the Stanley and (twice) Grey cups over my head. On two occasions it was with permission of the player who had been on the winning team.
I'm not superstitious as it's absurd that touching one cup affects your chances of winning another.
