2016 Salary Arbitration - 24 players file (No Flames)
July 5th 5pm ET was the deadline for players to file for arbitration.
July 6th 5pm ET is the deadline for clubs to file for arbitration
Remember arbitration is sometimes just a tool to ensure a player gets a contract and helps set a deadline for negotiations. Most won't actually won't make it to arbitration.
Arbitration will be July 20 to August 4th, exact dates and times to be announced later.
Players who file for arbitration cannot sign an offer sheet.
An arbitration award is either 1 or 2 years, the length is decided by the party who did not file for arbitration. The exception being if the player is 1 year away from UFA, it will be a 1 year award
Teams cannot walk away from arbitration awards of less than $3.9 million

Look at all of those New York Rangers! Wasn't aware that they had players named "Ottawa Senators" and "Philadelphia Flyers" in New York, their GM sure is shrewd.

I'm still hoping the Flames can snag Hoffman away from the Sens because of this.

That is risky business by the Rangers IMO - thought the may trade one of those 3 for the arbitration threat alone.
All 3 could easily get in the $3.5-4.0M range and that puts them in a lot of pressure under the cap.

What contracts can a player end up signing if they actually go through arbitration? Just 1 year deals, or can they go multiple years?

Can someone explain why there's so much drama around Tyson Barrie?
Seems like the kind of player you'd sign long term and build around.

because Colorado's owner is a cheap bastard... he likes to nickel and dime star players on all his pro sports teams.

Conspiracy theory of mine is that they retained hamiltons rights so they could use the arbitration to trigger a second buyout window if we are unable to move wideman by that time.

I don't believe the 2nd buyout window opens for a team elected arbitration
Quote:
The one exception to this extra window is when the only arbitration case is team-elected, and that player earned more than $1,750,000 (in 2013 dollars - it's adjusted up based on league average salary) in the previous season. In that specific case, the window does not open.
|
Wouldn't be able to buyout Wideman.

Seems like a sketchy game to play with your 23 year old budding star defenseman's brother. I mean, yeah it's a business and all, but it doesn't seem like a very wise road to go down.
Flames are clearly developing a rep for treating their players really well. This would be a step in the wrong direction IMO.

Freddy Hamilton only made ~$700k last season - doesn't that mean the window would open since he made less than $1.75M.
