Meant Shinkaruk because I think he's very close.

This will be a walk for Gillies.
Next round will be interesting as it looks like it'll be tight race between Kylington and Hickey, with maybe Shinkaruk playing 3rd wheel.

Kylington! Stashed away in the AHL, slowly growing and biding his time until he rips the crown of "Dominant Swedish Defender" from Karlsson.

Ortio was a complete bust until he turned 22 and had his redemption season,
Gillies has gotten better every year. He has a lot more in common in his development at age 22 with Matt Murray and Connor Hellebuyck and Johnathon Quick than the Flames pretenders that you mention.
Other than the hopefully fixable injury Gillies has been on the stud NHL goalie track.

Perhaps, but there's still reason to be skeptical about a 22 year old goalie with seven games of AHL experience. That just isn't much of a resume. He put up above average numbers behind a detail-oriented team in college, yes, but they weren't the kind of dominant numbers that Hellebuyck, Demko, and Ryan Miller put up. Forget NHL, there is no guarantee he even throws up a .926+ next season in the AHL, which is what Ortio did in his age 22 season and yet flamed out in the eyes of most.
I choose to err on the side of caution with a goalie whose professional resume is seven games long. Markstrom was a similarily hyped prospect with more of a resume at roughly the same point in his career, a few years later passing through waivers. Being an NHL goalie is a cutthroat business and I personally won't put my eggs into a seven games pro basket. Skaters sre easier to project in my eyes.

3rd time voting Hickey.
I expect I might need to vote for him at least 3 more times.

The top 3 were set in my mind (Tkachuk, Jankowski and Gillies) but the pro-Hickey/Andersson/Kylington/Shinkaruk made me really question Gillies at 3 and look forward to the next 4-5 rounds.
Flames fans have been burned by promising goalies so many times I can understand the reluctance to vote Gillies this high. But that pedigree, upside, stats and the fact that he's been on our radar for so long was enough for him to stay ahead of the next 4.

Hickey did make the World Junior team, but I thought he had an off year in college last season. A bit surprise of the number of supporters early on.

I just don't see the projection with Shinkaruk. I love his passion and character but I just can't see him being an impact top 6. He's going to have to score a lot of dirty goals in front of the net and I just don't know if he going to be able to withstand that physically.
He does seem to produce though.
Voted Gillies.

Give me a guy like Shinkaruk that can produce despite his limitations any day. I'd rather have the impact flawed player over the "has all the tools but never delivers" player. I mean, wasn't Shore supposed to be a surefire NHLer by now? Seems like he had all the tools but never delivered.
Gillies in this round for me, but my next set has guys like Kylington, Hickey, Mangiapane, Shinkaruk, and Andersson to choose from. After that, it'll be a little more wide open.

You know who else was underwhelming at development camp? Gillies. Didn't even dress for that all important scrimmage. Guy has no hope of making it to the NHL. /snark
Went with Gillies. Things will get interesting from here on out. Will be interesting to see where people slot the defensemen and then some of the 2nd tier forward prospects.

I can't vote for Gillies when a guy like Hickey is still on the board. Hickey can step into the NHL right now IMO given his active stick and outstanding positioning. Gillies is a ways off yet.

Playing away from the puck is only a part of playing D. I've seen Hickey handle the puck like a grenade too often to agree with this. I think he's minimum two years away from consistent bottom-pair minutes... Wotherspoon, Kulak, and Culkin are IMO currently a lot steadier with the puck even if they're not as talented.

Look at top fives we've seen
2013
Monahan
Baertschi
Gaudreau
Gillies
Jankowski
at the time 4/5 were pretty unknown, Baertschi disappointed
2014
Gaudreau
Bennett
Baertschi
Poirier
Granlund
excitement on Gaudreau, Baertschi down a notch, Granlund a depth player
2015
Bennett
Poirier
Gillies
Ferland
Ortio
bottom falls off somewhat in this top 5. People pumped about Ferland's playoff performance, but Ortio coming off a rough finish to a season
so this year should/could be a better list as a 5?
Tkachuk
Jankowski (surging)
Gillies (pensive)
Kylington
Hickey / Shinkaruk?
Is that the first time the top 5 are all projected upper roster players?
|
I am trying to get my head around how Jankowski is lined up to be an upper roster player.
Playing in his 4th year , after pretty well growing into his height he was the 12-13 highest scoring drafted player in the NCAA.
Are there 10 NCAA forward who e projecting to be upper roster players?
Maybe his size makes him a better chance to play in the NHL than some of the players out scoring him but how does he project to a top roster player?

It's interesting how poirier is going to drop like a stone from #2 after an underwhelming season, whereas gillies is going to remain unchanged at #3 after missing pretty much an entire season. I wonder if poirier had missed last season would he be still be voted one of our top 5 prospects.

Always interesting to see what criteria are important for people to vote.
Like others I'm hesitant to choose a goalie.
Went Shinkaruk because I think he's closest to NHL ready even if other guys have higher ceilings.

There is no board.
Honestly, I kinda agree with you. Mangiapane has Brendan Gallagher potential if he develops well.
